_ Buzzing Bee, Six Others Seek Select Handicap at Monmouth Roman Fair, Northern Star Chief Threats; Greek Ship Entered in Hindoo Purse By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 22. — Seven sophomore colts and geldings have been named overnight for the ! fourth running of the 0,000 Select Handicap . as this seashore course presents its ; ; second Saturday program of the current ; meeting tomorrow. Topweighted in the ! small band is Mrs. D. W. Hickeys fleet ; Buzzing Bee with 116 pounds, backing into! i that honor when the higher imposted [ nominees failed to accept the issue. Adding considerable color to the program, and given the honored position as i the sixth race by racing secretary John i Turner, Jr., is the Hindoo Purse at one mile • and a sixteenth. Included in this eight-horse field is Brookmeade Stables stalwart ; performer, Greek Ship, who was one of the ! leading three-year-olds last year and included among his many stakes triumphs ; the local Choice Stakes and Monmouth i Handicap. The Select Handicap and the excellent ; supporting feature should assure a large turnout. The public is certain to install Greek Ship a prohibitive choice, and he will receive added backing from his stable-mate Picador, a capable performer in his own right, with whom he is coupled as an entry. Buzzing Bee is expected to be a lukewarm choice for the stake, despite his defeat here last Tuesday. It was a fairly good effort, but he tired in the last stages as though on I the "short" side. With this as a conditioner | I the New Jersey-bred son of Knave High and Shore Leave may regain the swiftness which allowed him to turn in one of the fastest six furlongs of the Garden State Park spring meeting while winning his last race there. His only other race this year was a good one, with Iliad narrowly leading him at the wire. The muscular chestnut has plenty of speed, and he will undoubtedly force a fast pace tomorrow. Others in Line-Up The others in the Select are, in post posi- j tion order; Jay Cee Farms Pattys Day, 100; Alvin Untermyers Seaflash, 107; j Brookmeade Stables Blue Helmet, 108; j William HeUs. Jr.s Roman Fair, 114; C. Ewing Tuttles Tenure, 112; and Greentree Stables Northern Star, 114. Buzzing Bee will start from the number three stall and he will be ridden by Sammy Boulmetis. Roman Fair and Northern Star will be renewing a duel in which they finished in a dead heat at Delaware Park. They carried equal weights in that test, as they will tomorrow, and stepped off the six furlongs in company in an excellent 1:101s. Both will have the services of jockeys who are local favorites, Jimmy Stout assigned to Roman Fair and Fernando Fernandez to straddle Northern Star. Tenure failed badly in his race here, but some of his earlier races hold a promise that he can do much better. Blue Helmet, from the powerful Brookmeade barn, was considered a bright prospect as a juvenile but has done little to further his reputation , this year. Seaflash, who turned out for the first time of his career at Pimlico to equal the six-furlong track record, could be a "dark horse," while Pattys Day is decidedly outclassed. Greek Ship stands out in his race. The four-year-old colt, by Heliopolis — Boat, last year won almost 40,000 in stakes purses alone, and on occasion humbled older rivals. He has not shown his best yet this year in there starts, and although the favorite for the Suburban recently at Belmont Park, he finished next to last. Previous to this, however, Greek Ship was a close third behind County Delight and Palestinian in the Gallant Fox Handicap at a mile and three-sixteenths. Aligned against Greek Ship will be nominal opposition from Deep Blue, High Trend, Arthur Pilate, Fighting Fleet, Pic-ture Card and Unsinatus.
