Great Ovation for Armed HALLANDALE, Fla., June 22. — One of the most heart-warming ovations ever accorded a thoroughbred in American racing history occurred at Gulfstream Park a little more than a year ago when the Calumet Farms gallant gelding, Armed, closed his Florida racing career in a blaze of glory. The son of Bull Lea, most popular horse in Gulfstream Park history, came from behind with a cyclonic rush reminiscent of his younger days of glory as he ran down his field and drew away through the stretch. The roaring of the crowd swelled like an organ note as Armed returned to the winners circle, his head working up and down like a pump handle as though in acknowledgement of the tribute. After tolerating the usual saliva test in the paddock laboratory, Armed re-appeared along the paddock lane, to be again greeted with cheers. It was concrete proof that sport on a race track is not always measured by the glowing lights on the infield totalisator board.
