Mel Hash Edges Jeans Jay In Maplewood Purse Effort SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, M*ss., June 22. — Torrence C. Melroses Mel Hash returned to the scene of his successful juvenile career this afternoon and drove to a well earned victory in the featured Maplewood Purse. A half length back of the son of Hash was O. L. Fosters Jeans Jay with the favored Sickle Sue from the bam of Mrs. Sam Orr tiring to finish third two lengths back of the runner up. Ridden by the veteran Billie Fisk, Mel Hash was timed in 1:1215 for the six furlongs and paid .60. A crowd of 8,505 were on hand for the afternoons sport, conducted under ideal weather conditions. Sickle Sue sprinted away from the barrier in the Maplewood to suggest she was going to make a runaway of the dash. In the opening quarter mile, the Unbreakable miss was five lengths in front of the runner up, J. Nobles Lionheart, with Mel Hash under a stout restraint about two lengths farther back. Lionheart kept after the leader on the turn out of the backstretch and had cut the leaders advantage to three lengths at the quarter pole. At that point, Mel Hash was roused and swung to the outside to pass both leader and challenger. Once in front the six-year-old Melrose colorbearer responded gamely to outlast the efforts of Jeans Jay, who closed stoutly, but fell short of catching the winner by only a half length.
