Danny Direct in Midwest Debut in Dan Patch Pace Canadian Invader Covered Mile In 1 :59.4 at Lexington in 1950 SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., June 22. — Danny Direct, rated one of the premier pacersto come out of Canadian training grounds, makes his first Midwest start in the ,495 Dan Patch Stake Pace, a 13 Class conditioned early closing event, at Sportsmans Park tomorrow night. The six-year-old Billy Direct bay horse, owned by Alex Parsons, of Brantford and London, Ont., finished off the 1950 campaign in a blaze of glory. He started at Lexington, Ky., and covered the mile course in the bristling time of l:594/5, beating Stormaway and Try Wyn. Prior to this outstanding trip, Danny Direct went a mile at the Syracuse State Fair mile track and toured the distance in 2:02%, while defeating Green Mountain Boy and Bernard Hanover. In all, Danny Direct started 18 times in 1950, won seven, finished second five times and third twice for an earning power of ,320. Parsons will be remembered as the horseman who purchased that good pacer. The Diplomat, from the Fair Acres Farm. DuQuoin, 111. Danny Direct tuned up for his 1951 American invasion with five straight triumphs on the Canadian circuit. In all five miles the Danny Direct horse won with ease. Veteran Canadian reinsman, Vic Rowntree, piloted the Parsons horse in Canada and will be in the sulky tomorrow night at Chicago Downs. Despite the fact that Danny Direct drew 8-11 for the two-trip stake event, horsemen believe that he has so much speed and staying power that position shouldnt in any way retard the crack pacer from being the one to beat for all the money. The 11 -horse field for the pace consists of Red McKlyo, Mr. Dale, Chief Mite. Atomic Might, John Lee, Widow Worthy. Guest Star, Thomas Hat, Chief Strong and Victory Grattan. Guest Star drew the pole for the mile race, while John Lee gained the coveted spot for the mile and one-sixteenth affair. In addition to the fast-class stake pace. Sportsmans Park offers a top-line stake trot, a 19 Class conditioned early closing event, for Saturday night. Nine evenly-matched trotters will go two trips, a mile and one mile and a sixteenth. for a purse of ,270. The field for this event consists of Hal Tass, Brazie, Tidewater, Clever Sunny, Bob Eric, Lucky Lee Prince, Lu McEllen, Abram and Great Siskiyou. Clever Sunny, owned by A. D. Knapp. Jackson, Mich., will probably be the public choice after his performance at Sportsmans Park on June 20. On that evening the nine-year-old gelding covered the mile distance with a smart 2:07 performance. This apparently sharpened him up for Saturdays stake race. Hal Tass and Lu McEllen each won last starts. Hal Tass was clocked in 2:12, while Lu McEllen came from practically last position to win in 2:13.
