Oak Brook Stages Annual Meet at Hinsdale Today Three-Mile Timber Event for Challenge Cup Heads Program Steeplechasing will make its first appearance of the season in the Chicago area today as 38 hunters go to the post at the fifth annual Oak Brook race meeting. The five-race program starting at 2 p. m. will be run over the Oak Brook steeplechase course located at Cass and Cermak Rds. route 83 northwest of Hinsdale. Feature race of the afternoons card will be the three-mile timber event for the Oak Brook Challenge Cup, which will attract such perennial contenders as P. T. Cheffs Friars Melody, winner of the cup in 1950, and Paul Butlers Some Gold. Also rated as contenders are Mrs. Jack Brants Negotiator, S. F. Bartletts Jungle Jim, R. Keekers Boyscout, and another Butler horse, Beaver Kill, which has been leased to Ted Mohlman and Dr. W. J. Derl-nee. v The opening event will be the Brother Jonathon, a mile flat race on the turf, featuring Mohlmans Pert, Dr. John Youmans Brierless Rose, and an entry by Charles Jelke of Dont Tell, Willie D. III. and Cherokee Princess. Among the favorites is Austin Browns Foxy Poise, son of Gallant Fox, which Brown will ride. There will be two hurdle events, both at two miles. The Illinois Steeplechase entries include such veteran campaigners as Byron Hilliards Virginia Ranzi, Charles Pierces Boo Tip, David Cummings Prairie Imp, Dr. John Youmans Storm Hour, and Mrs. Youmans Storm On. The maiden hurdle race, the St. Regis, has a field of six hunters, including Pert and Dont Tell, as well as Hidden Hand, owned by Miss M. R. House, Paul Butlers Hasty Colleen, C. P. Browns Pine Grove and H. S. Nichols Kardjar. Final race on the program is a six-furlong sprint on the turf for women riders in full hunting attire. Several hunters running today will be nominated for the special two-mile hurdle race to be run next Friday at Arlington Park. Todays event, sponsored by the Hunts Racing Association, is sanctioned by the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, and is the climax meeting of the Midwest hunt circuit. Steeplechases already have been run at Nashville, Louisville, St. Louis and Indianapolis, tnd many contenders from these races are in todays field.
