Miss Miss Highbrow Highbrow Tallies Tallies at at Arlington; Arlington; Volcanic, Volcanic, Miche Miche Meet Meet in in Woodlawn Woodlawn Favored Wondring Winds Up Second Brown Hotel Filly Qualifies For Engagement in Modesty; Mr. Fox in Popular Score ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 25. — Miss Highbrow avenged her recent defeat by Countess In and qualified in handsome style for her Saturdays 0,000 Modesty Handicap when she carried topweight and outran her field in the Far Star, six-furlong feature here at Arlington this afternoon. Jockey Ea1 Knapp brought J. Graham Browns hard-hitting four-year-old to the end of this event a length before Dixianas Wondring while the latter was beating Endovina and Alesias Countess In three parts of a length for the place. War Talk ended up fourth after dwelling at the outset. Wondring was generally expected to win, going off the favorite, while the successful daughter of Heliopolis returned 1.20 in the "tote." The time was only 1:12%, but it was faster than the track, and it was a hard race from flagfall to finish. Miss Highbrow showed a return to the form which enabled her to win the Columbiana at Hialeah last winter, and the Misty Isle here at Washington Park last summer. She had up 122 under the terms of the Far Star, and gave Wondring and Countess In four pounds apiece. 11,977 on Hand Arlington and its patrons were favored with very pleasant, sunny weather as the second week began, and 11,977 filed through the turnstiles. The racing strip was a trifle off and was termed "good," which means it wasnt in the lexicon of the turf. Wagering was brisk throughout the afternoon and indications were that the success of the first six days will continue through the new week, with three of the clubs many rich stakes to be decided. Miss Highbrow was running all the way in the Far Star Purse, pegging the pace fairly close up as Asphalt blazed the trail, prompted by Famous Shake. When Famous Shake ran out of oxygen on the last turn, Knapp sent Miss Highbrow up fast on the outside. She collared Asphalt entering the long home lane and they staged a spirited tussle down past the furlong pole, where Asphalt began to retreat and the Brown filly sailed away. Wondring and Countess In were steadied along* off the pace but in good positions going down the back side and began moving forward on the outside as they swung for home together. Each was running over tired horses the last part of it and both finished well, though neither could reach Continued on Page Five i | I | | j | j I I | i i i 1 1 1 1 1 Miss Highbrow Qualifies For Modesty Engagement j Wins Arlingtons Far Star Purse ■ By Length Over Favored Wondring Continued from Pape One the winner. War Talk also finished run-I ning, after coming out of the gate last. Brenton Light and Sickle Flight showed little. Those who made Mr. Fox favorite for the j Glencoe had a few anxious moments during the stretch run, when Floating Clown challenged him, but R. L. Baird kept scuff- | j | ling and Mr. Fox kept digging in to such I good purpose he still was the better part ! Of a length clear at the line. The Glencce j was the days secondary offering, decided | at a mile and an eighth, or once around j the big Arlington oval, and Mister Morgan I wound up a distant third in a field of six ■ j allowance horses. Mr. Fox, who paid .80 and hung out 1:52 for the distance, incidentally, has set up a remarkably consistent record this season, earning a placing in 14 of his 16 starts, • and improving from a ,000 plater to a 1 point he now opposes stakes horses. William 1 , Crumps Flying Delia was along in time to take third honors. The start of the second was marred when jockey Logan Batcheller was thrown from 1 E. E. Hal Price Headleys 5 favored Redingote sprinted into command and held sway to the end of the five and ■ one-half furlongs to go under the wire six c lengths in front of Murray Hill Farms Em. • Redingote was returned to the Sunny Blue Farm unit after completing his task j in l:074/5.
