Dictionary Takes Audacious by Nose Rounds Out Triple For Ted Atkinson : Questionnaire Colt Stands Hard Drive at Aqueduct to j Nip Extinguisher in Photo ■ By BOB HO R WOOD : i Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y.. June 25.— Mrs. Wichfields Dictionary mildly surprised the , crowd of 19.279 this torrid afternoon at ! Aqueduct as he stood an equally torrid ; drive in the featured Audacious Purse to i nose out Oscar Ciresa, Jr.s, Extinguisher ! at the end of the six furlongs. The Ques- j tionnaire colt completed a consecutive , triple for Ted Atkinson, who had won the j fourth and fifth races on Ham Bone and! Level Sands. C. Howard Scheids Maryland Day, an! invader from the Free State, was four lengths back of the embattled leaders in third place, almost a length before Mrs Edward Laskers Hull Down. Dictionary paid 2.10 and required 1:13 for the distance over a good- track. The horsemen in the crowd, and those regulars who knew of the tragedy, were saddened by the death of steeplechase jockey Harry Harris, who was killed while j schooling a green jumper after the hurdle race. The boy had a host of friends who i will miss his quick wit, friendly smile and 1 his complete courage and integrity in a I dangerous sport, where the opportunities j are far from being in proportion to the risks. Challenged by Maryland Day Atkinson hustled Dictionary to the front at the start of the Audacious, but was quickly challenged by Maryland Day, who forced his pace to just above the eighth pole. Moseid was a fairly close third followed by Extinguisher and Hull Down, who raced as a team. Maryland Day weakened in the upper stretch when Extinguisher surged up to challenge on the outside. The veteran shoved his nose in front for a stride or two at the eighth pole, but Atkinson refu I to give up on Dictionary and the colt came on again on the inside to regain command at the sixteenth pole. Jack Colaneri kept shoving on Extinguisher, however, and the Airflame gelding was gaining again at the end, but missed by inches. After the race, one of Atkinsons fellow riders remarked, "he ought to do okay on Dictionary. He swallowed one before he ever came to the races." Patrick Torinos Sign Here and Ruth Oppenhehns Saint Loup compiled a 01.20 Daily Double. Keith Stuart rode Sign Here. who drew out in the stretch to take the seven-furlong opener by three and a half lengths from Osmer S. Dealings Jaco-1 marty, who led Phantom Farms pacemak-• ing Sugarbush by a head. Mrs. Same Ren-J icks Lilbon, the favorite, finished fourth. along the outside fence. Sign Here paid 3.50 straight. Eric Guerin brought Saint Loup up with a rush in the stretch to take the second race by two lengths from Edward Tans Scotch Dream, who had set the pace. Spring Hill Farms John Joseph was an-"■ other length and a half away at the end of the mile and a sixteenth. Saint Loup re- turned 5.60 for a .00 win ticket. j ■ j | j | I ! j | j I ■ j • 1 | , ■ | r
