Shifter, Cigar Maid Owner, Also Bid on The Pimpernel LEXINGTON, Ky., June 25. — L. P. Doherty, manager of Elmendorf Farm, returned from an extended trip to eastern racing points. Doherty will have as his guests at Elmendorf Jack W. Shiffer, New York broker and owner of Cigar Maid, Fashion and National Stallion Stakes winner. Trainer Walter A. Kelley is also expected and the two will look over yearlings and some breeding stock that Shiffer has at Mrs. John Hertz Stoner Creek Farm. Doherty revealed that Shiffer, who secured Cigar Maid for 2,000 at Saratoga last year, also was one of the contending bidders on The Pimpernel, another of the progeny of Pavot. Previous to securing his modest thoroughbred holdings, Shiffer had an extensive string of show horses. Doherty feels that if Shiffer also had secured The Pimpernel that he and trainer Kelley might have wondered how long this had been going on.
