Blue Lantern Leads Starecase Home Odds-On Favorite ; Beaten Decisively Gavegnano Colt Draws Out Swiftly for Eight-Length Victory at Monmouth Park By WILLIAM PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 25. — Displaying surprising good speed coming off a recent route race, Joe Gavegnano s Blue Lantern this afternoon ran Down James Cox Bradys shifty sprinter, Starecase, after a half-mile and drew out for the finish of the six furlong-featured Proctor Knott Purse for a winning margin of eight lengths. Starecase, a 7 to 10 favorite, had his expected early speed, but readily gave way to the ultimate winner turning into the stretch and he was then doing his best to remain second by a neck over Mrs. C. A. Copes Bolo Mack. Grandview Stables Happy Victor finished fourth and Frank Yacovellis Joiner was last. Only iive horses started in the feature, and there was no show wagering. Blue Lantern was third choice and paid 1.80. He was ridden by Fernando Fernandez, who, by virtue of this triumph, moved to the front in the race for local honors with one more than Jimmy Stout. Crowd of 9,500 Out The skies were a bright blue and the weather very warm. About 9,500 patrons viewed the program that was conducted over a fast racing strip. The feature was run in a very rapid 1:11 ft. Blue Lantern is a rather small colt who was bred by the late Samuel D. Riddle and is a half-brother to the mighty War Admiral. He won one of his last three starts at a distance of ground, but todays victory was by far the most impressive effort he has turned in this year. Several eligibles for the August 1 renewal of the Sapling Stakes tested their speed in the third race, with Green tree Stables promising Devil Diver colt, Row Row Row, proving a decisive victor over Cain Hoy Stables Alls Fair. The two recent New York invaders led R. C. Hannas first-time starter, Candle Wood, and seven other colts and geldings. Dave Gorman handled Row Row Row, who was timed the five furlongs sprint in 1:00%. He was the second odds-on choice to be successful and paid .80.
