Sicambre Scores Neck Victory In Grand Prix de Paris PARIS. France, June 25 Reuters — In a thrilling finish, Jean Sterns French Derby winner, Sicambre, won the Grand Prix de Paris, leading French flat race, at Long-champs yesterday. This crack brown colt, by Prince Bio-Sif beat Mme. Patrick Hen-nesys Lavarede by a neck, with the Gaek-war of Barodas costly colt, Aquino, three lengths further away in the field of 15 runners. England didnt have any representative in the race. The Italian champion, Nuccio, finished well down the field after setting the early pace. The race, run over a mile and seven-eighths, was worth nearly 24,000 pounds sterling to banker Stern, who is Frances oldest race horse owner. Paul Blanc, who piloted Sicambre, said afterwards : "It was a very hard race. Nuccio was with me most of the way but as soon as we got to the straightaway I knew who had won." Sicambre, unbeaten this season, went to the front in the drive and Lavarede, who was third behind Sicambre in the French Derby a fortnight ago, made a game challenge and made up ground rapidly but Sicambre, though weakening, just held on to win. The French president, Vincent Auriol, was among the 100,000 racegoers at the meeting. Also present was United States ambassador to France, David Bruce. s Margaret Truman, daughter of the president of the United States, watched the race from the presidential stand as guest of the French president.
