Pros Begin Practice Sessions For Oakmont PGA Tournament OAKMONT, Pa., June 25 UP.— Hazy clouds tempered a blistering sun at Oakmont Country Club today as the nations top pros took practice rounds over the 6,900-yard course, where the 5,000 Professional Golfers Association tournament opens Wednesday. Heavy rains overnight left the course, ! site of 12 PGA title events, in excellent shape. The pros agreed it may take a four-under | par 140 to win honors in the 36-hole medal play. Match play starts Friday. Lew Worsham, the host pro, gave a warning of the type of play it will take to j land among the 64 qualifiers with a four-under practice round of 32-36 — 68. Most of the field of 140 already were on hand. Henry Ransom and Argentinas . Roberto DeVincenzo, who won the Iverness best -ball tourney at Toledo Sunday, arrived with a group of 16 pros who had I made the Ohio stop on the circuit. Erratic drivers got a break when the groundskeepers decided to furfow only I those of the 142 traps which lie near the greens. The rough has been allowed to grow to a i good five inches in heavy spots, but the ! fairways have not been narrowed. Grounds-keeper • Jack Snyder said that a brownish tinge on the greens was not a grass blight, , but merely the result of rust in the water used for spraying. The greens are fast and rolling. Pros familiar with the course warned they wont t take a bite on long approach shots and I that hidden rolls call for "baby" instead of I "bold" putting.
