Twenty Twenty Named Named for for Crete Crete Inaugural; Inaugural; Dark Dark Star Star Starts Starts in in Preakness Preakness Prep Prep Will Give Weight ] To Five Opponents Derby Winner Carries 122, Four Above Royal Bay Gem, Eight Over Correspondent By CHARLES HATTON PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 16.— Dark Star, hero of an epic struggle with Native Dancer in the Kentucky Derby, distinguishes a field of six named for Mondays ,500 Preakness Prep here on "the old Hilltop." What is celebrated as Preakness week in Maryland should begin in appropriate and exciting fashion when Harry Guggenheims colt encounters such as Royal Bay Gem and Correspondent in this mile and a sixteenth. For these also are credited with some very smart performances this spring, and the trio are generally regarded as the most serious rivals for Native Dancer in next Saturdays seventy-seventh version of the 00,000 Preakness. Also named for the Prep are Bay View Stables Country Gossip, Darby Dan Farms Lord Jeffery and Bruce S. Campbells Ram o War. A victory for any of these will be more or less upsetting to students of form however. Gained Unique Distinction The conditions of the Prep impose top-weight of 122 pounds on Dark Star, and require him to concede four pounds to Royal Bay Gem, eight to Correspondent and the others. Nevertheless he is expected to make his first Maryland appearance as a well-backed choice, on the basis of the unique distinction he gained in beating Native Dancer. The Derby marked his most recent start, but he has trained gratifyingly for Eddie Hayward on Long Island. Royal Bay Gem, a distant fourth in the Derby, raced his way back into the Preakness picture when he beat lesser rivals for the Jersey Stakes at Garden State Park. Correspondent has been refreshed here since he weakened after chasing Dark Star a mile in the Downs classic. In the Preakness they will meet at levels of 126 pounds of course, and if Dark Star can beat the Prep field at his weight disadvantage, he will doubtless have more backing to repeat his conquest of Native Dancer next Saturday. The familiar Henry Moreno, who rated Continued on Page Forty Bulky Field of Twenty Named For Lincoln Inaugural Stake Continued from Page One culty making the turns, finishing unplaced.
