It was chilly and a light rain fell through the greater portion of the day. The sport was very formful however, with four favorites and a second choice winning the first five races. S. Howards Gladanhod, ridden by Willie Downs, won the fifth race and returned her backers .40 in defeating the favorite Dr. Wright by a length and a half at the end of the mile and one-sixteenth. Gladanhod gained the lead as the horses raced around the clubhouse turn, opened up five lengths on the backstretch, and though tiring in late i stretch had enough of a cushion to coast i home. The winner is a chestnut daughter of Count Gallahad who loves a muddy track which prevailed here today. The last time : she ran over such a strip here at Ascot she : won by 12 lengths. Her time today was i 1:52%. Grand Nugget, given a rousing ride by Tommy Haley, came through with his sec- ond consecutive victory over this track : when he defeated Heyboss by two lengths I at the end of the six and one-half furlongs. . Grand Nugget was timed in 1 : 25 ft and re- turned his backers .60. Grand Nugget was allowed to loaf well off the early pace by his rider, as the horses I raced into the far turn he started to make ! his move and circling the field on the final [ bend came to within a length and a half ■ of the pacesetter Elbutte at the head of the ! lane. In the late stretch with five horses across l the track the ultimate winner surged to the ! front and then increased his margin to the ! end under energetic handling. The smallest Daily Double return of the l current meeting resulted when two top-. • heavy favorites Whatanurse and Valley f Doctor won their respective races. The Double return was only .40 and jockey Eddie Plesa, Ascots leading rider, rode both i winners.
