Award Senator Joe Honors in Stake Squared Away Set t ► Back for Crowding Jan Burke Sprinter Lowers Pimlico Track Standard in Baltimore Spring Handicap By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 16.— Jan Burkes Squared Away, after reporting eight lengths in the van in the five and one-half lengths in the van in the five and 1:04% in this afternoons Baltimore Spring Handicap, was disqualified and placed last for having caused considerable crowding immediately after the start of the event. The ultimate winner was Alan T. Clarkes Maryland-bred Senator Joe, the son of Alaking, who held the previous standard. While far behind Squared Away, the five-year-old Senator Joe turned in a commendable i effort under Bobby Mitchell to j move from last position in the 11 -horse i field and outfinish High Ground Stables j Landseair by a neck, with Mrs. Samuel M. j Pistorios Tuscany next to finish. Landseair * and Tuscany raced coupled and both of their riders claimed foul against the original winner, which brought about the disqualification. The sixteenth running of the Baltimore Spring « Handicap was witnessed by a weekend J crowd of 18,569 and wagering was again , brisk, with form followers going down . with the three-horse entry of Tuscany, Landseair and Brazen Brat in the feature. • Those who preferred the chances of Senator « Joe took down a return of 5.Gf for each .00 wager, while owner-trainer-breeder Clarke realized a net return of 1,800 as the winners share of the 9,075 "pot." Cuts Across Field Sharply There was little doubt as to where the crowding had occurred, for Squared Away broke from next to the outside in the field and nothing was within striking distance from the half-mile pole to the finish. He ] did, however, cut across sharply, bothering Tuscany and forcing Angelo Vasil to steady Landseair along the rail when lacking room to move through midway of the back-stretch. It seems highly probable that other participants were deterred though possibly it was not as noticeable. While Squared Away "loped" along the front under Jimmy Nichols and 121 pounds, Landseair, Jess Linthicum and Hyphasis raced in closest attendance, though none was able to offer a challenge. Senator Joe, in the meantime, had been allowed to settle , into stride after hesitating briefly and was improving his position nicely. , Squared Away was four in front at the ; furlong pole and doubled his advantage in 1 the last panel, while Senator Joe charged I from behind to collar Landseair and out- [ game that one despite the fact that he was I conceding him nine pounds. Tuscany, who J was responsible for the trainer Bowes Bond 5 entry being made the favorite, found his ■ ! rough trip and a 125 -pound burden more l than he could handle, but he managed to , keep intact his record of having earned a portion of the purse in each of his five , 1 starts this year, all of which were in stakes r company. Matt J. Cremens Be Gracious, a six-year-old 5 J Discovery — Her Grace mare, who | seldom turns in a disappointing effort, * charged from last place to account for the J mile and one-six*eenth Only One Purse J I . which preceded the feature. Jerry Lynchs ! Sonic was two lengths behind the winner and a similar distance ahead of Mrs. J Charles R. Lewis Mondaval. Be Gracious time for the distance was 1:45% and she returned .20 as the second choice to J Sonic. . Be Gracious was handled by Jimmy Combest and was the second winner on the card for that booter. Combest, who will handle Royal Bay Gem in next weeks Preakness, had scored with Eugene Con-stantin, Jrs., Son Rock in the opener to j start a Daily Double which was worth j 3.20 when Nick Shuk hustled Dr. Cricket l to victory in the second race. Shuk also completed a double prior to the headliner, ■ taking the fourth race with Elsmar Stables Dada, who was awarded the top spot b through the disqualification of David G. . Neumans Third Ace.
