■ j i : J | : Brentlawn Asking Board To Review Its Application Track on Shelbyville Road Wants To Conduct Running-Horse Meet CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 16 — Brentlawn has asked the Kentucky Racing Commission to review its application to conduct a running-horse meeting at its track on Shelbyville Road. The commission turned down the Brentlawn application this past winter. Brent-laws activities so far have been confined to harness horse meetings. Clarence H. Kirchdorfer, president of Brentlawn, handed the new request to John Dugan, secretary of the commission, today at Churchill Downs. The letter, addressed to Wathen Knebel-kamp, chairman of the commission, reads in part: "Brentlawn feels the reasons given by the commission in refusing the original request were extremely weak. Certainly they were not of sufficient importance to justify the commissions decision which denied Kentuckians their inalienable rights of free enterprise." The commissions main reason for denying the original Brentlawn application was that it did not feel another track was needed in the area between Churchill Downs and Keeneland. Kirchdorfers letter went on to say that while a review at this time would come too late to hold a meeting this year, but, if favorable, would permit Brentlawn to start construction and improvements for a 1954 meeting. The next meeting of the commission isnt scheduled until Dade Parks opening on August 5. Dugan said it was too early to say if a special meeting would be called to review Brentlawns bid.
