Western Western Springs Springs Purse Purse to to Raintree; Raintree; Twelve Twelve Agile Agile Sprinters Sprinters in in Roseben Roseben Tuscany Will Again Face Squared Away Dark Peter, Tea-Maker and Hirex Get Weight From Top Pair at Belmont Park Today By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 26. — Mrs. Samuel Pistorios Tuscany and Mrs. Jan Burkes Squared Away head a field of 12 agile sprinters in the fourteenth running of the 0,000 Roseben Handicap at Belmont Park tomorrow. This six furlongs on the Widener straightaway is named for Davy Johnsons great sprinter and weight carrier of almost half a century ago, who, among other feats, won the Toboggan on the same course when Belmont Park opened its gates in 1905. Tuscany won this years Toboggan with Squared Away up the track, while the latter scored an eight-length victory at Pim-lico recently, then was disqualified, while Tuscany finished fourth. Squared Away set a track record in that dash, but racked up the field at the start, with Tuscany the principal victim. They each carry 124 pounds tomorrow, but Squared Away will start only if the track is fast, which is a doubtful prospect at this writing. Previous Winners Named The last two winners of the Roseben are in tomorrows field and both have been racing well enough this year to rate serious consideration. Harborvale Stables Dark Peter, who won under 113 pounds last year, carries 122 tomorrow, while Woolford Farms Delegate, who scored under 111 in 1951, gets in with 112. Dark Peter was a close third behind Tuscany and Hyphasis in the Toboggan on May 2, then a more distant third behind Tom Fool and F. Ambrose Clarks Tea -Maker in the Joe H. Palmer Handicap on the main track. Delegate finished fifth in the Toboggan, but was more than somewhat retarded when his left hind bandage came unravelled during the race. Tea -Maker, who has showed a liking for the Widener course, showed signs of returning to his best form in the Palmer Handicap, which was his first good race Continued on Page Forty -Three 1 I i , ; . 1 • r , ; ; • i • i Raintree Defeats Seventh Sun With Favored InseparableThird d Continued from Page One go.
