Hartack Has Splendid Chance To Prove Pimlicos Top Rider PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 26.— Ap- prentice William Hartack faces a splendid opportunity to become the leading rider of the Pimlico spring meeting during the final five days of the session. He now has won 17 races to 18 for the veteran Nick Shuk. Har-tacks chance, however, comes not only from the fact that he is riding in excellent form, but also from the stakes engagements of Shuk, which will take him to Belmont Park Wednesday, Delaware Park Friday and Garden State Park on Saturday. Thus, Hartack will have five days of Pimlico action against two for Nick in his quest to pick up enough winners to take over the lead. Hartack is a native of Johnstown, Pa., and is 22 years old. He broke into racing under trainer Norman Corbin and first gained his riding experience at Waterford Park where he scored his first victory on Nickleby, one of Corbins horses. Hartack rode well at the first Charles Town meeting prior to the opening of the Maryland season and then won 16 races during the combined Laurel-Bowie meet. The apprentice has until October with his allowance. He has been called up for the draft on three occasions and rejected three times. His agent is Calvin Bowlin.
