ManyNewcomersSeeking River Downs Stall Space Total of 1,100 Horses to Race At Meet; 150 Already on Hand CINCINNATI, Ohio, May 26. — Eugene W. Bury, veteran racing official who handles the racing secretary duties at River Downs, announced yesterday that the stall applications being received for the 44-day meeting that gets under way on June 5 have hit an all-time high. "There has been an influx of applications from stable owners who have never raced at River Downs before," said Bury, "with a great number of horses scheduled to come from the Lexington, Louisville area and from eastern tracks for the first time." Bury, who is presently engaged as racing secretary at the Beulah Park meeting, was on the River Downs scene over the week end and he reported that better than 150 horses were already on the grounds and working out daily. There will be approximately 1,100 horses stabled at River Downs for the 1953 session that runs through July 25th. Among the well known trainers who will return to River Downs for the 1953 meeting is Gale Osborne, leading trainer at last years session with 15 winners. Osborne was one of two trainers who lost thoroughbreds in the stable fire at Beulah Park on May 10. Osborne lost 11 horses and a lead pony in the disastrous blaze that destroyed 18 horses, but since then has replenished his stable. Racing secretary Bury will make a weekly visit to River Downs until the close of of Beulah Park on Memorial Day and then shift the scene of operations to the Queen City track.
