Keene, a staunch family man, has a home in Lowell, Mass., where reside his wife and two small children. Keene made a similar move last year and was quite successful in New England. His many followers in this territory will wish him the best of luck. Keenes departure Friday leaves William Bishop without a regular rider, but the man from Anna, 111., has entered into an agreement with Paul Bailey to pilot his horses here . . . Smoke Screen, the hard-running four-I year-old from Reverie Knoll Farm of Freeman Keyes, may appear in an overnight race here soon as a preliminary tune -up for his engagement in the Lincoln Handicap to be run June 20. Smoke Screen was generally regarded as the best of his age at the New Orleans Fair Grounds last winter, winning the LeCompte, Letellier Memorial and New Orleans Handicap Dean Cavy and Happy Carrier, who finished first and second, respectively, in the Joliet Stakes last season, have arrived from Kentucky in charge of trainer Chester Hall. Neither of the three-year-olds were named for Saturdays Peabody Memorial. . .John S. Letellier, president of the Fair Grounds track at New Orleans, was an arrival and expects to spend several days in this territory . . . Jockey William McKinley Cook has been engaged to ride H. L. Nathensons Guy in Saturdays Peabody Memorial. John Heckman will have the mount on Dixi-anas Berseem in the same race. The five-year-old mare Flyamanita will be in from Garden State Park next Mon- day. She will be a starter in the Camden Handicap at the New Jersey course Satur- day. . .Jockey Doug Dodson will depart for Delaware Park Friday evening to have the mount on Mrs. Ada L. Rices Cerise Reine in Saturdays Delaware Oaks. Dodson will be back Monday. . .Trainer Larry Thomp- son left for Kansas City to attend the grade school graduation of his daughter. . .Jockey Leslie Wickel, who is at present serving a suspension, has left for Fairmount Park. . , The second edition of the Lincoln Fields condition books are out. . .John Haxby and Don Carron, seniors in the college of vet - erinary medicine at the University of Hli- nois, were visitors last Saturday as the guests of Dr. Paul J. Meginnis, track vet- erinarian. Dr. Meginnis was formerly an instructor at the veterinary school. Ike Bassett, the big little man of the Jockeys Guild in this territory, is back from his swing to Omaha and Fairmount Park for the openings. Ike reported that everything is cozy out yonder. His next trip will take him to Detroit and Ohio . . . Jockey Willie Zakoor, who was called to Detroit due to the illness of his mother, has returned. . .Joe Hardwick flew from his home in Louisville to take in a few days of racing. . .Jockey Herb Litzenberg, who staged quite a comeback at Sports-t mans Park after having been absent from the saddle for several seasons, has departed for Fairmount Park . . . Sam Wil- son, Jr., left for his Corpus Christi, Texas, home . . . Trainer N. A. McMaster has sent the three-year-olds Mr. Lamar and Red Carlockto Spring Lake Farm to be turned out. Former jockey Willard Brown recently underwent a throat operation at St. Anthonys Hospital, Chicago . . . Members of the pari-mutuel department are sympathizing with sheet-writer Al Sheridan in the death of his mother, who passed away recently. . Jockey Darrell Madden made a costly visit to Chicago last week-end. His mount failed to finish in the money and he was suspended for 10 days for rough riding . . .The haltermen seem to like the six-year-old Chuckalong. The gelding was claimed three times during the first seven days of the meeting. Chuckalong is one of the few Minnesota -breds racing in this territory . . . Mutuel employee Paul McLaughlin is in from Louisville attending the wedding of his daughter . . . Several carloads of steel have arrived for the re -building of the Lincoln Fields track .
