■ ~ T I Darby Dan Enters Trio in Rancocas TUSCANY — Shoulders equal top weight of 124 pounds with Squared Away in todays renewal of the Roseben Handicap at the Belmont Park course. I [Ten Rivals Face T Costly Ladybreath Wolf Gal, Snugger, Riant Ready for 6,000 Filly in Garden State Female Stake By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 26. — The Rancocas Stakes, a 0,000 added event offered for the private partici- , pation of two-year-old fillies, attracted a field of 13 young misses for its eleventh running here tomorrow. The Darby Dan Farm, owned by the Columbus, Ohio. « sportsman, John W. Galbreath, holds nu- I merical strength in the five-furlong dash • with Clear Dawn, Ladybreath and Banquet • Bell to carry his banner, and the three-ply threat will probably be favored in the bet- I ting. 1 Smith and Gottliebs Wolf Gal, heroine of ] a division of Hialeah Parks Juvenile Stakes, is called upon to carrp 121 pounds, high- ; weight honors under the conditions of the Rancocas, and her support will also be generous. Also prominent are Mrs. Ada L. Rices Snugger, Maine Chance Farms Incidentally, Mrs. Louis Lazares Sotto Voce, ; Mary H. Hunters Pinelet and D. and H. Stables Laurel Springs. The track is presently deep in slop, and probably will be no better than slow by tomorrow. Honors Famous Nursery The Rancocas, formerly captured by such feminine stars as Miss Kimo, Sea Snack, Imacomin, Bed o Roses, Brazen Brat and Biddy Jane, is named in honor of the famed thoroughbred nursery established last century at Jobstown, N. J., by Pierre Lorillard. The farm has retained its prominence I through the ownership of Harry F. Sinclair and its present status as the Helis Stock Farm, owned by William G. Helis, Jr. Clear Dawn takes precedence among the , Darby Dan threesome. The daughter of Heliopolis and Darby Dunedin made up ground to finish third behind Evening Out and Fascinator last Wednesday in the National Stallion Stakes at Belmont Park, and she was a convincing winner here over a muddy track. Her only other start was in the Dinner Stakes at Gulfstream Park, in which she finished second to Sherry Jen. Ladybreath, a daughter of Roman and Miss Brief, was the highest-priced filly at the Keeneland Sales last summer, going to Galbreath for 6,000. She has started only 1 one time, set all of her own pace and drew out to score over this local strip by a length. Reports from the stable indicate that Ladybreath and Clear Dawn are considered about on a par in their present abilities. Daughter of Polynesian Banquet Bell, by the successful stallion, ; Polynesian, and from the good racing mare, ■ Dinner Horn, skipped off with a division of • the Dinner Stakes at Gulfstream Park, and ! she turned on high speed before giving way I I 1 to be unplaced in her only local sortie.. No . " riders have been named for the Darby Dan j j trio, but the stable jockeys, Walter B. Williams and Harrison B. Wilson, are certain to be under colors. Clear Dawn blew out this morning over a sloppy strip in :36Vs. handily, while Ladybreath breezed the same distance in :38. 1 Wolf Gal, a Florida-bred daughter of the 1 German sire, Samurai, followed up her good 1 southern campaign by finishing second in the recent Fashion Stakes in New York and by placing third to Due de Fer in an over-; night event here. She will be ridden by Basil James, and warmed up over the strip !■ this morning with a handy :35% for three furlongs. Incidentally, although making her first invasion of stakes company, has a perfect " record of two starts and two victories in J New York. Dave Gorman will be down I from New York to be her pilot. J Riant has been selected by trainer Pres- ■ ton M. Burch to represent the Brookmeade Stable, and must be given strong consid- 1 1 eration to have deserved that honor. She 3 has started only once, and was a winner, j Snugger just missed in an excellent effort j j - here last week, and she turned in the best B trial this morning for her engagement, " spinning off three panels in a handy :35. " Laurel Springs opened up a long lead in the initial outing of her career here last 3 week, and just missed lasting while ap- s pearing a bit green.
