J. MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., June 16.— Calumet Farms 1952 Kentucky Derby winner, Hill Gail, was entered today for tomorrows three-quarter mile Wauconda Purse, which is to be the principal attraction on Lincoln Fields excellent nine-race program here at historic Hawthorne. Trainer Ben Jones plans to van Hill Gail over to Hawthorne from Arlington Park, where . the Calumet horses are now stabled. It will be the second start of the year for Hill Gail and the first for a Calumet horse on the Chicago circuit this season. In his only previous start in 1953 Hill Gail finished second to Ada L. Rices Pet Bully in the six-furlong Phoenix Handicap at Keenland on April 11, losing that century-old fixture by a scant nose. The Wauconda is one of two ,500 purses on the mid-week program, the other being the Marcia for three-year-old fillies, an event which would, in all probability, enjoy top billing except for the prestige of Hill Gail, upon whom the limelight settles. In the Marica the brilliant filly Mimi Mine meets six others her age and sex at three-quarters of a mile. Only Has 114 Pounds to Carry Five other good sprinters were entered to meet Hill Gail in the run for the Wauconda, the conditons of which let the Calumet colt in with 114 pounds, as it is fashioned for four-year-olds and older which have not won ,650 twice since April 20 or ,000 in 1953. Top weight, with 117 pounds, is Jet Ace, owned by T. M. Daniel, of Birmingham, Ala. Others are Cross Ring, 110, owned by Merle M. Mitchell, of Brush, Colo.; Cajun, 108, owned by the Hasty House Farm of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Reuben, of Toledo, Ohio;. Emil Denemarks Chicago-owned Futura-matic, 108; Night-Phara, 109, four-year-old filly owned by K. R. Martin and W. N. McKinney, of Tennessee. Hill Gail goes into the Wauconda Purse with a total earnings of 09,185 and victories in the Arlington Futurity at two, the Kentucky Derby, Santa Anita Derby, Derby Trial, Bhoenix Handicap and San Vincente Stakes last year at three. He was stopped for repairs after the Kentucky Derby, his place in the headlines being Continued on Page Thirty-Nine Nine Fillies and Mares Vie !n Top Flight at Belmont Continued from Page One ing race in New Jersey, finished third to Kiss Me Kate and Parading Lady in the Firenze Handicap at Jamaica, before that. Aesthete, No Score, Marta and Islay Mist, of tomorrows field finished unplaced in j that mile and -a furlong. Ira Hanford will ride the daughter of Little Beans. j Marta, who has been hampered by recur- ] rent foot trouble for the last two years, i appears to be going more soundly in recent ; weeks and her last two races have been i good. After . finishing third behind Aesthete | and One Miss at a mile, with Islay | Mist, Devilkin and No Score behind her, ■ she came back to be a close second to j Valadium at the same distance, hangin in j the stretch. Nothirdchance, Islay Mist, i No Score and Aesthete trailed the Wood- j vale mare at the finish. Conn McCreary. j who fits her well, is slated to ride Marta ! tomorrow. " i 1 Valadium, will probably be slightly fa- vored over Marta tomorrow, with consid- j erable support also going to La Corredora and the entry of Devilkin and Islay Mist, i if only because Arcaro will ride .the former. Bennie Green will pilot Islay Mist. Nothirdchance and No Score must be given outside chances at the weights. Hank Moreno is to ride Nothirdchance, while Ovie Scurlock will be on No Score. Sunshine Nell and Aesthete will probably insure a rapid pace from the start, but are not expected to be around at the finish. In its comparatively brief history, the] Top Flight has been won by such good fillies and mares as Tangled, Level Best, J Mar-Kell. Boojiana, Miss Keeneland, Hon- j eymoon. But Why Not, Nell K., Busanda. and, last year. Renew. Valadium finished J second in last years, running of the f ix*-ture. J
