STAY WELL, after being rated early, forged to the front on the final turn and withstood an extended drive. H00PDED0NT raced within easy striking distance, was slow to respond to pressure through the stretch, then was getting to the winner. JOE MANDELL, steadied when outrun for the early lead, saved ground to regain prominence but was not good enough. STEPFAR improved his position gradually, then weakened. GOLD LEAF was never a factor. VITAL retired early, as did EAGLE SPEED. DOVER COAST held a clear lead for more than a half mile and quit.
