Ruse Whips Good Band Of River Downs Sprinters Turns In Game Effort to Show Way Home to Chippewa Chief RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 16. — R. J. Hamons Ruse responded very gamely to Guillermo Silvas handling to defeat a good band of sprinters by a length and a half in the action-packed fourth race of the afternoon. Ruse held his margin over Chippewa Chief, who faltered slightly when challenged by Ruse after gaining command and looking all over the winner at the furlong pole. Silva was gaining his tenth victory of the meeting, which deadlocked him for leading rider with Billy Sackett, who rode Chippewa Chief. The fine week-day crowd of 4,675 sensed the impending stretch duel between these rivals- and raised a high-pitched cry .as Silva loomed up to challenge "or command. Ruse was, there when asked the question and raced the six furlongs in a creditable 1:12, to account for his first purse since -Sunshine Park this winter. The Tiger gelding paid .20 in a close betting contest which saw support spread through four horses in the -eight-horse field. Favorite players in the crowd got off to a flying start in the first two races of the afternoon as Minnich and Boss Ellis lived up to the support of the crowd and took down honors in the opening races of the day. Minnich provided Pete Maxwell with his fifth winner of the meeting* since coming-down from Ascot Park, where he was leading trainer during that spring meeting. Minnich was three lengths clear at the close of the six furlong sprint and returned .00. Boss Ellis had a half length less margin in the second race of the day as Gil Roser, who comes from neighboring Cincinnati, let the Haltal gelding run his own ✓race and Boss Ellis was equal to the task. Boss Ellis returned .00 for a straight ticket and the two favorites combined to show a 6.20 pay-off for the Daily Double events.
