Ohio Notes RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 16. Pete Maxwell acquired the gelding Happy Twist from owner T. Johnston at private terms. Maxwell formerly raced the 11 -year-old with considerable success. Jockey J. C. Fernandez, who was knocked out of action in a spill at Beulah Park, is mending rapidly and will swing into action here at River Downs next week. Fernandez pulled the ligaments of his thigh severely and the healing process has been a slow one. Clifford "Tack" Trimpe, who serves as identifier and timer at Churchill Downs and other racing centers, is acting as identifier here during the 40-day meeting at River Downs ■ — ♦ C R AN WOOD PARK, Warrensville Heights, Ohio, June 15. The highest handle of the current meeting was registered on Saturday when over 7,000 fans wagered 90,606. This falls short of the all-time high of 90,000 tallied on Memorial Day of last season. However, it was expected that on the Fourth of July a new all-time record will be established. Country Editor won the first of the Sesqui-Centennial Series on Saturday when he defeated Half Bar by a length and one-quarter. There will be three more such races run, with the finale on July 15 at one mile and three-quarters. This series was patterned after the Old Hilltop series run this spring at Pimlico. Harry Washburn has taken over the riding engagements of the promising apprentice Eugene OKeefe. Mr. and Mrs. Mack B. Lesnick, hes the secretary and treasurer of Cleveland Raceways, Inc., operators of Cranwood Park, departed for their Baltimore home last night. They will be back for the July 4 week-end and will be accompanied by their daughter, Lilla. Jockey immy Barnes was on the track at Thistle Down galloping horses for the first time since he suffered a fractured shoulder bone received in a spill at Ascot Park. Barnes expects to be seen in action at Cranwood Park next week. Jimmy Lewis, custodian of the jockeys room at Cranwood Park, states that the new hot room and sweat boxes in the jockeys quarters are best he has seen at any track. t Waldo Andrews and Doc Peters of the Hazel Park official family were clubhouse visitors yesterday. Both men motored back to Detroit following the races.
