Shag Tails Tops Field of Seven Milers In Grand Circus Park Purse at Detroit Little Donor Shares Honor Impost of 120 With S ha grin Racer; Fugitive Totes 779 By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 16. — Milton Shagrins Shag Tails, quick four-year-old homebred son of Alsab and Pig Tails, heads a field of seven high class racers slated to clash at this spacious "Michigan Mile" track tomorrow afternoon in the Grand Circus Park Purse, top attraction on an unusually good midweek program. Under the allowance terms of the eight furlongs Wednesday feature, Shag Tails will be one of the top weights at 120 pounds and the Cleveland-owned colt, early choice for the headliner, is to have the saddle services ot the veteran reinsman, Carroll Bierman, 1940 Kentucky Derby star and one of the best race riders on hand for the current Michigan Racing Association season. Shag Tails, a stakes winner during his 1952 campaign, recently captured the six furlongs Linwood Purse, stepping along in an impressive 1:10% to down some of the better sprinters quartered here. Among those following the Shagrin Stable star to the wire in the Linwood were Black Bantam, Elaine Ruth, Sweet Patootie, the 1952 juvenile filly champion; Asphalt, Vixen Fixit and Ballydam. Trainer Lloyd Gentry had Shag Tails on the fast track here this morning and the colt gave dockers and work-watchers a sample of his high speed, i whirling three-eighths of a mile in ;34% quite handily. While Shag Tails looms a stout favorite over his Grand Circus Park rivals he, nevertheless, will have to turn in a sharp effort to register another success. In the overnight field named to oppose him are the G. and G. Stables speedy Little Donor, equal highweight under the conditions at 120 pounds; Violet Gainers Passing Jack, 104; J. H. Miles hard-hitting Fugitive, 119.. and T. Ferraras New Orleans - owned Light Moon, 113 pounds. Also Mrs. George C. Whites improved Speed o Light, 108, and Grace Kosibas Motor City-owned Slipper Satin, 103 pounds. Late last year, Little Donor chalked up three straight victories against speedy opposition and, after finishing third behind Air Flight and Crownlet in the Schoolcraft Purse on June 1, captured the one mile* Port Huron Purse on a foul, a classy band following Big Cat and Little Donor home in that Detroit engagement. But three - quarters of a length separated Big Cat, who was disqualified in the Port Huron, and Little Donor at the Port Huron Purse finish. /- Best supporting offering on the Wednesday card is the three-quarters mile fifth, which will match eight shifty sprinters, three - year - olds and older. Mrs. Stella t Lottis consistent Ghibli, with jockey Craig at the reins, will try for his fifth triumph in seven outings and his speediest competition in the dash probably will be furnished by Steven Valentis Louisiana-owned Sheriff Grosch and the G. and G. Stables Almenow. The latter entrant finished a strong second behind Ghibli last week while Sheriff Grosch trimmed Broad Cross, Nocallula, Helwari, -Arizona K., Hurry-Skurry and Cardinal Lady in a six-furlong overnight event. Robert Lee Baird will have the mount on Sheriff Grosch, and diminutive Henry Ford is engaged for Almenow.
