Penocc in First Score of Season * Takes Measure of Euclid At Delaware; English Jockey Wells Rides on Program By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent , DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 16. — Mrs. Chester A. Lyons Penocc, a five-year-old gelded son of Occupy — Pennant Lass, who is often close but seldom wins, 1 earned his initial set of brackets this year when he downed seven other sprinters in the featured Salisbury Purse this sunny afternoon. Mrs. Ellsworth H. Augustus . Euclid was a fast-closing second over Mrs. E. Kendall Weils Lord Admiralty. With an average week-day crowd of approximately 13,000 on hand, apprentice Bernie Hewitt rode a well-judged ride astride Penocc to have him home a half length to the good in 1:11%. Danny Sheas Sweet Vermouth, who finished fourth, was the favorite, while Penocc returned .60 as the second choice. J Sweet Vermouth Takes Over Penocc outbroke the opposition from the six-furlong chute, but it was Sweet Vermouth who moved through along the inside to attain a slight advantage. He was followed by Penocc and Alan T. Clarkes Jean-nie C. The latter retired earlier than usual however, and dropped back on the turn. It was not until nearing the stretch that Penocc moved to the front of Sweet Vermouth and Lord Admiralty tried vainly to reach the leaders. While he was unsuccessful, Euclid, who had trailed along the back-stretch, unleashed a strong charge at the first flight. Euclid, a stakes-winner in his previous seasons, and topweight today under 124 pounds, was unequal to the task while conceding Penocc 14 pounds and failed to overtake that one while continuing gamely. Euclid finished a length in advance of Lord Admiralty, who was a length and a half clear of Sweet Vermouth. Delaware patrons saw in action in this race jockey George Wells, a 33-year-old English rider who, earlier in the afternoon, had accepted his first mount in this country. Wells, though born in England, has lived in Ireland since 1933 and has ridden with success in both countries. His American debut was anything but auspicious, for he finished eleventh astride Brightella in the 13-horse field, which contested the fourth race, arid was last in the feature astride Castilian.
