Seven Sprinters Match Strides at Fairmouht Mondes War Looms Choice Oyer Texas Flash, Red Cornet Tonight By C. A. LINDEMAN Staff Correspondent FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111., June 16. — Short distance runners again will hold the spotlight here at Fairmount tomorrow night when seven sprinters match strides in the Glen Echo Purse at five and one-half furlongs. This event brings out horses that have not won more than two races other than maiden or claiming since March 28. Battling it out for the. ,300 purse will be such fleet sprinters as Mondes War, Texas Flash and Red Comet. Mondes War who finished second to the fleet Creme-de-Cocoa last Friday night in a six-furlong dash figures to rule favorite in this event as all of his races here have been impressive. His last out was good as he was second in a race that was run in 1:12 flat. Prior to that he was returned victorious by a nose over Big Bomber and Mr. Emile over six furlongs in 1:12% with 113 pounds up. In this three-year-olds only other start at this meeting, he finished second to Stilton, only being beaten by a length in 1:12%. In the Glen Echo, Mondes War will have 116 up and Melvin Duhon will be wearing the J. Reece silks. J. G. Logsdon will .saddle Texas Flash who will attempt to vindicate himself against the horses he will meet in this five and one-half furlongs dash. This three-year-old filly always turns in top performances against this type of sprinter and has lots of early speed as her recent races show. With the feather of 104 pounds up and apprentice Ken Griffith in the saddle she should be a tough filly to hold. Red Comet, from the stable of P. H. Green, will be making his second start-of the meeting when he meets this fleet field in the sixth event. His last shows he is very fast away from the gate as he led the field for over a quarter before he gave way to superior sprinters. If he improves off that effort he should be up there fighting it out for part of the Glen Echo Purse. Apprentice G. R. Martin will handle the reins on the Green stables sprinter. Making up the balance of the field for the Glen Echo will be Silver Relief, 114; Mister Plucky, 116; Mr. Emile, 111, and Marion Rose with 104. |
