Notteer, WilI View !a Regret on Saturday * * Former Jockey Was Astride Famous Miss When She Won | Kentucky Derby of 1915 S MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J,. June 16. — When the Regret Handicap field O goes postward Saturday afternoon at Mon- z niouth Park, one of the most interested O spectators in the stands will be former -n jockey Joe Notter. "For it was this same O Notter who, back in 1915, was astride Re- 5 gret when she became the first and only ■?* filly ever to win the Kentucky Derby, and he will be reliving that thrill and inhaling again the aroma of roses as Regret is JO honored through the naming of this major Z event. 1/1 Later Notter will stand in the winners circle and join in presentation ceremonies - to the victorious horse, and It will be strange indeed if memory does not come c filtering through the concealing layers of z the years to the afternoon when he and r" Regret shared Derby honors and received — the plaudits of the crowd. "Despite the fact no filly ever before had won the Derby — nor has one won the J? race since — Regret was a .65 to fa- w vorite," Notter said the other day at Monmouth Park during one of his occasional visits to the tracks. "As a two-year-old she had won the Hopeful, the Sanford and other classics and except for her sex would have been a much shorter-priced choice. Gets Away -on Top "I can never forget that Derby running. I had Regret away from the barrier in front, and she was leading by half a length past the grandstand the first time with Pebbles second, and Sharpshooter third. We coasted along in that order until the five-eighths pole where I saw the first wrap drop from around the wrists of the boy riding Pebbles. He moved to Regrets throat-latch but when I loosed my own rains she easily responded. "Around the far turn into the stretch Pebbles tried once more, but he might as well have played tag with the wind. Regret was still a length and a half in front, and at the wire that margin was two lengths as Regret smashed the illusion in convincing style that a filly could not win the Derby." During" her career, Notter pointed out, Regret started just 11 times, winning nine of those races and proving unbeaten during her two- and three-year-old campaigning. Complete earnings were 4,993, less than one victory is worth to such a horse, under todays inflated purse values. "She was a great filly in every way," Notter said, "and it will be a real privilege to witness Saturdays Regret Handicap at Monmouth Park, a race which does her homage so many years afterwards. Many fine fillies and mares have come and gone since 1915 but to me — and to those privileged to witness that long-ago race — there j will never be another like Regret."
