I., N.-Y., June 16.— Greentree Stables Hows Tricks, a chunky chestnut daughter of Question- naire from the stakes-winning Whats New, by Blenheim II., was made a prohibitive choice in the featured Sheila Purse at Bel- mont Park today, but never left the issue doubt. Taking the track when Ted Atkinson permitted, Hows Tricks coasted home four and a half lengths before Belair Studs Sabette, who had been beaten inches in the Coaching Club American Oaks last out. Claiborne Farms Blue Jeans finished fairly well to be third, another length and a half away and two lengths before C. V. Whitneys Carry the News. The followers of Hows Tricks in the crowd of 17,283 who turned out in pleasant summery weather collected .40. There was a minus show pool of ,089.50. The filly required 1:11% for the six furlongs over a fast track, with Atkinson shaking his stick by her head after looking back at the sixteenth pole. Hows Tricks was receiving four pounds from the Belair filly today, but beat her by considerably more than that margin. However, Sabette, who was never far off the pace set by the winner, was coming .from a distance race and was surprisingly sharp -under the circumstances. Carry the News went along with Hows Tricks until Atkinson let out a notch on the favorite rounding the far turn and Hows Tricks promptly opened a length lead. Sabette was lapped on Carry the News at this point. Though Atkinson was content to steer Hows Tricks around the wide curve to the stretch and allowed her to come out a little, she rapidly drew away, coming to the furlong pole three , lengths before Sabette, while Carry the News was fading fast and Blue Jeans, who was being rated for the first time, was just beginning to pick up speed. Hows Tricks drew away still farther in the last eighth, though only asked to keep a straight course, while Sabette had no trouble holding Blue Jeans safe. The latter showed an improved effort with the change in tactics, as she had been stopping badly after showing early speed. Lester Manor Stables Affrighted skipped to a popular triumph in the Eastport Purse, charging downfive furlongs of the Wide-ner straight course, in :56% and having a bit left as he reached the wire a length and a half before W. Goadby Loews Seven Spades. Maine Chance Farms War Pointer was another half length away after setting the early pace, while C. V. Whitneys Blue Skies was two lengths out of the money.
