Cyclotron Cyclotron Surprises Surprises in in Clangs Clangs Dancer Dancer Easy Easy Travers Travers Victor Victor Whips Van Crosby in Sprint; Grassland Handicap to Stan JOCKEY JOHN HECKMANN Guided Cyclotron to his triumph in the Clang Handicap at Washington Park. Mark-Ye-Well7 Hill Gail and Crafty Admiral Unplaced in Former Washington Stake By J. J. MURPHY WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., Aug. 15. Clifford Mooers Cyclotron, a Calumet-bred horse who invaded this territory last summer and did not fare so well, came through with an excellent effort to win the 0,000 Clang Handicap here today. Saddled by the old master, "Whitey" Whitehill, and ridden by John Heckmann, the five-year-old son of Pensive was as sharp as the proverbial tack in running his seven furlongs in 1:23. He defeated Dun-treath Farms Van Crosby, who tied Clangs seven-furlong track record of 1:22 during the Arlington Park meeting, by two lengths and was going away from his rival at the finish. Third place was earned by Golden Maxim Stables Steady Eljay, with Jampol bringing up in fourth place. Back in the ruck in the Clang and soundly trounced were such famous name horses as Mark-Ye-Well, Crafty Admiral, Hill Gail, and Oil Capitol. Mark-Ye-Well and Hill Gail, racing as the Calumet entry, were heavily backed favorites, but their supporters had no chance to even set up a mild shout. Hill Gail, ridden by Brooks, was fairly prominent early, but dropped out of it in the stretch to finish a badly beaten last. Mark-Ye-Well, with Arcaro sitting in the irons, was never a threat although finishing fifth. Real Delight Last Stan, an English three-year-old who was purchased by Hasty House Farm a couple of months ago and was making his third start in this country, proved his ability to race on the turf when he charged through the stretch to win the 5,000 added Grassland Handicap in a driving finish from Brush Burn, another outsider. Stan was ridden by Johnny Adams and ran the mile and an eighth distance in 1:49, which was but three-fifths second removed from the track record. Third money went to Vantage, a former claiming horse, Dance Nsing fourth, and the Calumet Farms Real Delight, heavily backed favorite, was last in the 11-horse field. Crafty Admiral and Mark-Ye-Well had the excuse in the Clang that they had not started in some time, but they did not look like the thoroughbreds who were among the top runners in America last year. Crafty Admiral was close enough in the initial stages and tired to finish eighth. Mark-Ye-Well was off eleventh and was well back most of the way. Perhaps both are awaiting bigger and better days. Oil Capitol, whom the distance certainly did not suit, was a fast going seventh at the finish, but Hill Gail appears to be in need of a rest. The race was strictly between Cyclotron and Van Crosby after Oh Leo had given way early. Cyclotron, who had a fine half mile workout Friday, paid 2.20. The attendance was 28,802 in fine racing weather. Following the running of the Clang, jockey Arcaro said of Mark-Ye-Well: "No excuses, my horse didnt have a thing in front of him. He even got through on the turns. I think he should improve Continued on Paga Tftrea Cyclotron Scores Upset In Clang at Washington Whips Van Crosby as Name Horses Are Unplaced in Dash Continued from Page One with a little more racing. Of course, that was a lot of weight following his long layoff." The riders of the first and second horses made the customary quotes, but we didnt hear a thing from the jockeys on Crafty Admiral or Hill Gail. -Perhaps they believed that any explanation of the ordinary efforts of their charges would be futile. Vantage set the early pace in the Grassland, with Brush Burn but a length removed, and when the latter took over in the stretch to open up a two-length lead, it seemed as if he would not be caught. Jockey John Adams, however, had been saving Stan, and he sent the son of King-way through an opening in the last eighth. Brush Burn held on well and although beaten a half length, was four lengths in front of Vantage at -the end. Real Delight, with Arcaro up, had top-weight of 122 pounds and displayed early speed. She bore out on the first turn, however, and was rather wide thereafter. Abbe Sting, winner of the Stars and Stripes and the Laurance Armour Memorial, both on the grass, found todays speed horses too much and the distance a trifle short, although she finished well. Stan paid 7.00 and his net earnings was 6,850.
