Gov, Lawrence Wetherby! Swelters at Dade Park Makes Presentation After Route Feature Before Crowd of 10,000 By J. J. HAHN Staff Correspondent DADE PARK, Henderson, Ky., Aug. 15. Today was Governors Day at Dade Park and blue skies, which brought sweltering weather to this section, failed to dampen the spirits of the more than 10,000 racing fans, including Governor Lawrence Wetherby and many of his followers. Kentuckys "top man", as well as many other dignitaries, "sweat it out" the same as the other racing fanatics in the 90-tlegree heat. The feature, of course, was the Governors Handicap, a one mile event which brought out some of the best distance runners quartered here. Governor Wetherby made the presentation of a blanket to the winner and following the ceremonies in the winners circle the popular politico, along with his large gathering of friends, left for the state -capital at Frankfort. Made an odds-on favorite, Thoughtless, owned by R. C. Gilmore, made a show of her opposition in the six-furlongs opening race. She was nine lengths in front of I-Lou at the end of the dash. I-Lou put up a game exhibition in the stretch to outgame Evelyns Joy to garner the place by a head while Evelyns Joy was a nose before the weakening Throttle Miss. When Naomi won the second race, another six furlongs dash, those who coupled her with Thoughtless in the first, received the smallest Daily Double pay-off of the season. Several thousand ticket-holders shared in the refund of .80. Taken back repeatedly during the first five-eighths of the race Naomi was sent to the extreme outside at the head of the stretch by F. Maher and once she hit her best stride picked up the leaders quickly and won drawing away by three lengths. Dark Desert, forcing the pace made by Strike Em Dead, faltered when placed to pressure, while the early leader, in front to the last sixteenth, chucked it steadily thereafter. After saddling Naomi for her victory in the second race, C. M. Whiteside came right back and produced the winner of the Kentucky Purse, a six-furlong dash used as the third race. The successful one was Smith Bros. Gerties Last and was ridden by F. Maher.
