Alerted Tops American Legion Field Faces Eatontown, Kaster in Sprint Six Other Stakes on Agenda This Week to Give Saratoga Busy Week in Fine Racing SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., Aug 15. Seven stakes are on the agenda at Saratoga next week, starting with the 0,000 American Legion Handicap at seven furlongs on Monday and climaxing with the 5,000 Grand Union Hotel Stakes and 5,000 Saratoga Handicap on Saturday. The six-furlong Grand Union brings together the best of the juveniles who have escaped the cough, and the handicap is a test at a mile and one-quarter, from which Tom Fool has aiready been declared, thus assuring a well-matched field including such stars as Greentrees One Hitter, Putnam Stables Combat Boots, Hampton Stables Alerted and Ogden Phipps Ancestor. Weights are due on Monday. Juveniles will vie in the 0,000 Sanford Stakes at six furlongs on Tuesday, fillies and mares are slated to clash at a mile and one furlong in the 5,000 Diana Handicap on Wednesday, Thursdays feature is the ,500 Beverwyck Steeplechase Handicap at about two miles, whlie on Friday, juvenile fillies go six furlongs in the 0,000 Spin-away. All in all, it looms a busy week and promises a considerable improvement in the quality of the sport at the ancient, tree-shaded course in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Has Easy Whirl as Running Mate Eight have been named for the American Legion, headed by Alerted with 123 pounds. The "Iron horse" will have a running mate in Easy Whirl, 107 pounds. While the American Legion is primarily a prep race for Alerted, a poor work horse who has been racing himself into condition, the son of Bull Lea has been closing well enough at six furlongs to have an excellent chance at seven. His chief rivals appear to be Mrs. Alfred Roberts Eatontown, 122 pounds, and C. Mahlon Klines Kaster, 120. Dave Gorman will ride Alerted, while Charley OBrien will be on Easy Whirl. The new Jersey-owned Eatontown has fared well on his New York invasions this year, winning the Fleetwing Handicap at Jamacia and an overnight feature at Aqueduct, and finishing third to Tom Fool and Squared Away in the Carter Handicap in three tries. His last start at Monmouth was not good, but the veteran has been training well here. Bennie Green will ride. Kaster, a versatile sort, has won his last two sprints and beat a sizable field here on Thursday. Mrs. Gerard S. Smiths Ni-lufer, who has 110 pounds on Monday, finished second to Kaster in that dash. Alfred G. Vanderbilts Indian Land, who chased Tom Fool in the betless Wilson Mile and was eased, through the stretch, has been training well since that fruitless venture and gets in with 112 pounds, plus about three pounds more of Eric Guerin. His previous race in the Questionnaire was a good one. The American Legion field is completed by F. Ambrose Clarks Acefull, 115; and Ogden Phipps Ancestor, 112 pounds. On his best races, Ancestor who will be ridden by Ted Atkinson, could be formidable.
