Saratoga Sales Notes By NELSON DUNSTAW SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, 3T. T., Aug. 15. There were many bidding duels when the yearlings of Almahurst Farm were sent into the ring on Friday night and the highlight of the evening came when a handsome colt by Heliopolis out of Theen, by Sickle was led into the ring. The bidding opened at ,000 with I. J. Collins, Major Warner and many others quickly making offers. Collins was in the bidding from start to finish and finally took the colt with his offer of 7,500. There -were many people at the ringside for the first time this season including Mr. and Mrs. Frank Frankel, Herman. Delman, B. A. Dario, Dr. Eslie Asbury, John Gal-breath and his son Dan, -Mr. and Mrs. 1 George Galbreath, Chester Gates, Gayle Mohney, Bill Evans of the Breeders Sales. Company, Dave Woods, and the noted jockeys Ted Atkinson and Nick Wall. Chester Gates, acting as agent for John Galbreath of Darby Dan Farm paid 3,000, the second highest price of the night, for a bay colt by War Admiral out of Rockabye. He also bought the bay filly by Roman out of Sun-Blest for 8,000. It was apparent that many came to Saratoga just to attend the -Almahurst sale and one of these was Russell Reineman, brother of Howard Reineman of Crown Crest Farm. Russell Reineman purchased a gray colt by Nirgal out of Topsy for 2,000. A bidding duel that gripped the attention of those present came when a gray filly by Mahmoud out of Arbitrator was brought into the ring. She was finally knocked down to the Brae Burn Farm for 2,000. This farm is owned by James O. McCue. Shortly after that the bay filly by Mahmoud out of Bride Oaks caused a series of bids and finally went to J. P. Jones who was acting as agent, for 4,000. There has often been warnings issued by George Swinebroad and Humphrey Finney against waving programs or otherwise attracting the attention of the auctioneers. Last night one of the most amusing incidents occurred when J. C- Pollard of Houston, Texas, raised his hand to brush! a fly off his head. Right then and there j he bought a chestnut filly by Djeddah out j of Gino Patty for ,000 and, like a good sport, he laughed it off and took the miss. He has been a frequent buyer at the sales, J but everyone around the ring was hoping that this one turns out to be the most successful. Djeddah proved popular with those at 1 ringside, one of his colts going to Carr Hatch, of Toronto, for 7,000, and immediately after that another was sold to Mrs. Edward S. Moore, of Circle M Farm, for , 5,000. 1 I I Larry MacPhail, who staged a successful sale of his own on Thursday night, purchased a bay filly by Nirgal out of Wood Spirit for ,000. Alfred G. Vanderbilt, Bill Winfrey and , Ralph Kercheval sat quietly for most of I the evening, but finally the owner of Native Dancer went into action and paid 7,500 . for a chestnut filly by Rippey out of U-Boat.
