Bob Mathias Pens Article Blasting College Football NEW YORK, N. Y., Aug. 15 UP. Bob Mathias of Stanford University, two-time Olympic Decathlon champion, blasts "commercialism" and the "distortion of values" in college football in a by-lined article in "Parade" picture magazine. "Im passing up football at Stanford University this fall my senior year because it is no longer a sport," writes 22-year-old Mathias. "In pro ball the sport is honest with itself. Thats why I would play pro ball. You see, I really do love the game." v Mathias proposes five cures for the evils of college football. Among his suggestions are long-term contracts for coaches, a standard code of sportsmanship, and to have .home teams throw regular get-acquainted meetings before games to eliminate bad feeling between schools.
