Cyclotron Cyclotron Surprises Surprises in in Clangs Clangs Dancer Dancer Easy Easy Travers Travers Victor Victor Record Gathering Of 28,260 at Spa Vanderbilts 1-to-20 Choice Draws Away From Dictar at Furlong Pole in Few Strides By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 15. Alfred G. Vanderbilts Native Dancer drew a record throng of 28,260 to Saratoga today, 2,028 more persons than had ever attended a program of racing at the ancient track since it opened its gates in 1864. Several hundred fans, including many young girls in their bright summer dresses, flowed into the infield for the 84th running of the Travers, but the Pinkertons were able to control them as they spread out in search of positions from which to view the race. A special walking ring had been constructed for the gray champion in the paddock and the throng was 20 deep around this enclosure as he was saddled by Bill Winfrey. The throng saw a horse race for nine of the 10 furlongs, but when Eric Guerin moved his hands at the eighth pole, Native Dancer responded with the rush you expect when you press the accelerator of a Cadillac, drawing clear in a few smooth, ground devouring strides to score by five and a half lengths over George Auerbachs Dictar -Mrs. Widener Wichfelds Guardian n. was another two and a half lengths away in third place, while C. V. Whitneys Fly Wheel was a length behind. J. W. Nizleks Mr. Jamieson, who was unable to keep up with the slow pace, was another 25 lengths lin arrears. Win and Place Betting A prohibitive choice, Native Dancer returned the minimum .10, .10 to win and place. There was no show betting. The gray json of Polynesian Geisha, by Discovery required 2:05 for the distance over a fast, i but somewhat dead, track. However, he was I not really asked for speed at any stage of I the journey, merely asked to leave his modest rivals at the furlong pole. The V Travers was the 17th victory for Native Dancer in 18 starts and the 8,850 he earned without exertion brought his total to 77,420. His only defeat, and that by inches, was in the Kentucky Derby won by Dark Star. Walter M. Jeffords presented Mr. Vanderbilt with the Man o War Cup in the winners circle ceremonies. As the field left the gate at the head of the stretch, Ted Atkinson hustled Guardian Continued on Page Fifty Native Dancer Easily Outruns Trayers Foes Gray Champion Draws Record Crowd of 28,260 to Saratoga Continued from Page One II. to the lead, while Hedley Woodhouse moved Dictar into second place, and Guerin was content to rate Native Dancer behind the leaders as they sped past the stands and around the clubhouse turn into the backstretch. The pace was moderate, first quarter in :24 and the half in :49. Dictar moved to Guardian n. early in the backstretch run and quickly took a slight lead, while Native Dancer was going easily less than a length behind them, with Fly Wheel a close fourth, while Mr. Jamieson trailed. Native Dancer moved past Guardian n. at the three-furlong pole, which the leader reached in 1 : 14, but Guerin didnt ask the favorite for speed and Fly Wheel was right behind the favorite as they swung around the final bend. Once they straightened away, Native " Dancer took command, but Dictar held on valiantly until Guerin asked the favorite to run as they reached the eighth pole. The champion responded with an electrifying burst of speed that left Dictar tied to the fence. Guardian n. continued steadily, outfinishing Fly Wheel for the minor share of the stakes. The Dancer caused a minus pool of ,598.15. His total minus pools now-have reached 3,632.23. He goes to Chicago and Washington Park on Monday. Llangollen Farms favored Porterhouse came to the inside of Cain Hoy Stables Turn-to at the head of the stretch in the 51st running of the Saratoga Special, then outgamed that colt to score by a half length, but was disqualified and placed last. The son of Endeavour n. appeared to bear out slightly in the stretch duel, however, and Eric Guerin seemed more than slightly . careless with his whip, apparently hitting Turn-to as they passed the furlong pole. Henry Moreno claimed foul as soon as he reached the unsaddling enclosure and after deliberation and a study of the films the stewards allowed it. The stewards said that the films clearly showed that Porterhouse came oat and interfered with Turn-to, but failed to give positive evidence of any illegal i3m of the whip. Ih the revised placings, Turn-to was made the winner by the first disqualification in the history of the winner-take-all stake, with second honors going to C. T. Chenerys Permian, who had finished four and a half lengths behind the Cain, Hoy colt, and third place being awarded to Saxon Stables Sir Boss, who had finished another two and a half lengths away. Turn-to, who had won his recent debut impressively, paid .10 and Porterhouse required 1:12 for the distance. The imported son of Royal Charger Source Suc-ree, by Admiral Drake was purchased from Arthur B. Hancock for 0,000 and earned 7,250 today, giving him a total of 9,525. Though this edition of the Special was a two-horse race between Turn-to and Porterhouse from the start, the stewards were left no choice, under the New York rule, than to place Porterhouse last. Turn-to took command a few strides out of the gate,, followed by Sir Boss, but Porterhouse moved up to challenge rounding the far turn. Turn-to continued to lead the favorite by a litle more than a length to the final bend, where Guerin steered Porterhouse to the inside. Porterhouse ranged up in a stride or two to take command, but came out slightly. Turn-to did not appear to be knocked off stride, or to be intimidated by Guerins whip, which, it seemed from the stands, hit him on the chest once or twice. In the final yards, Porterhouse outgamed his rival, but there was no surpise when Moreno claimed foul. It also seemed that both colts might have been slightly short, having missed works because of recent muddy tracks, but clearly outclassed their three rivals. Permian was moved into his fifth straight place of second in a major stake, after runnig an even race.
