I I Over-All Spa Sales Average ,350 Sum of 60,400 For Knight Group Collins Bids In Heliopolis . Colt for 7,500; Market Strong at Closing Vendue By HUGH J. McGUIRE Staff Correspondent SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 15. The 33rd annual sale of yearlings by the Fasig-Tipton Company at this upstate Spa concluded on a strong note Friday night when the entire session was given over to the consignment of Henry H. Knights Almahurst Farm of Nicholasville, Ky. This group of 28 colts and 18 fillies paraded under the hammer of auctioneer George Swinebroad, who cried the entire session, and at the end the 46 youngsters realized 60,400 for an average of 2,183. Last year Knight sold 47 head for 82,700 to average 4,526. The five nightly sessions this year saw 247 head change ownership for ,062,500, an average of ,350. In 1952 a total of 332 head fetched ,095,500 to average ,312. The success is obvious of the new policy of the company which reduced from seven to five the number of sales sessions and featured fewer yearlings with greater appeal. There were 85 more yearlings sold last year yet the gross receipts this week were only 3,000 less than a year ago while the average soared from ,312 to ,350. The result and the wisdom of this policy is clearly seen in that during the first and last sessions in 1952 the averages were ,831 and 1,162, respectively. War Admiral Colt Brings 3,000 High price realized on Knights night was the 7,500 bid by I. J. Collins of Lancaster, Ohio, for a dark bay son of Heliopolis from the Arlington Lassie winner Theen. This fell short by ,500 of reaching the high for the entire sale, the 9,000 paid by Nydrie Stud for a daughter of Bois Roussel consigned by the Aga Khan. Arthur Godfrey " paid 8,500 for Brookmeades colt by Case Ace Dutch Cut at the Tuesday session. Collins also secured a filly by Rippey Elpis for 6,000 earlier in Fridays sale. Another prominent Ohioan in the limelight was Chester Gates, farm manager of the Darby Dan Farms of John Galbreath at Galloway, Ohio and Lexington, Ky., who went to 3,-000 for a son of War Admiral Rockabye, and to 8,000 for a daughter of Roman Sun Blest. Bidding began briskly with the first offering, a beautifully molded son of Priam H. Aphaona for whom Frank Podesta, acting as agent, paid 5,000. This colt was followed by a gray daughter of Mahmoud Arbitrator who brought 2,000 on the bid of Brae Burn. Farm. Later on in the sale, Russell Reineman, brother of Howard Reineman, of Lexingtons Crown Crest Farm, paid a similar sum for a gray son of Nirgal Topsy. Greentree Stud secured a son of Priam n. Say Blue for 0,000 and these were the yearlings sold for or above that figure. - -Following the lively opening of the sale, bidding began to lag and was enlivened only intermittently when one. of the more desirable offerings entered the ring. It was about at the half-way mark that new interest I. J. COLLINS Paid top price of 7,500 for the Heliopolis-Theen colt in the Almahurst Farm consignment. could be felt coming from bidders and from that point until very near the end, the market remained solid. In four sales sessions at Keeneland this year, 302 yearlings were sold for ,943,400 to record an average of ,746.
