Briton Sets New World Three-Quarter Mile Mark LONDON, England, June 7 UP. — Britains Brian Hewson set a new world record of two minutes, 55.4 seconds for the three quarters of a mile at Paddington track tonight. • Hewson clipped the previous record of 2:56.6 made by Swedens Arne Anderson in 1944. The International Amateur Athletic Federation does not recognize official records for the distance. Hewson, whose run beat the old mark by 1.2 seconds appeared fresh as he sprinted through the tape, his arms raised in victory. Hewson was one of three men who recently ran a mile in less than four minutes in the same race.
