Joe Conrad, the newly-crowned British Amateur golf champion from San Antonio, Texas, begins, his bid for the French title Wednesday when he plays Frances Yvs Le Quellec in the first round. * Bill Campbell of Huntington, W. Va., and Bruce Cudd of Portland, Ore., two of Conrads Walker Cup teammates; Clarke Hard -wicke of Los Angeles and Don Bisplinghoff of Orlando, Fla., are the other top threats among the 24 U. S. players entered in match play tournament. Most of the American entries are servicemen stationed in Europe. Campbell, who was upset last week in the - first round of the British Amateur championship, meets Sarbar Malik, the Indian ambassador to France, and Cudd plays C. D. Chapman of England in second round matches Wednesday afternoon. Campbell and Cudd drew first round byes. Hardwicke, beaten by Henri De Lamaze of France in last years final, also received a first round bye and will play Jack Brown, a U. S. soldier stationed at Frankfurt, Germany, Wednesday afternoon. Lamaze begins his title defense in a second round test against Francois Vagliano of France. Bisplinghoff, a 20 -year-old youngster who reached the quarter-finals of the British amateur, plays Mitchell Zawisza of the United States in the first round. Also Played in British Tournaments Vincent Fitzgerald of Garden City, N. Y.; Ray Graham of Glen Head, N. Y.; George Coleman of Miami, Okla.; and Ted Bassett of Greenwich, Mass., four others who played in the British tournament, also have entered the French championship. Fitzgerald will play J. R. Levy of France, Graham will meet T. Hartwright of Britain, Coleman will play Marcel Carlhian of France and Bassett will meet P. Jaillardon of France in the first round. Players from six nations have entered the competition on the 6,608-yard Chantilly course. Other first round pairings involving U. S. players: Bruce Coffin, Salem, Mass., vs. M. Bar-dana, France; Lt. S. serviceman stationed at Fontainebleau vs. F. A. Brett, Britain; Paul Coste, of James-, town, R. I., now stationed at Saint Germain vs. G. Huet, France. Col. Robert L. Conrad, a U. S. officer stationed at Saint German vs. G. Miller of the United States; Col. Kenneth Smith, a U. S. officer stationed at Fontainebleau vs". H. Harchibald of" Canada; Col. P. D. Miller, a U.
