Chicago Downs Runs Despite j Rain-Soaked Racing Strip SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, HI., June 7. — The Chicago Downs trotting meeting opened here at Sportsmans Park last night despite the heavy rains that fell practically all day until an hour before post time. When it was found that the mobile starting gate could do little more than skid and slide in the mucky going, it was decided to dispense with the mechanism and starter John Dale sent the fields away using an amplifier to direct them. The opening-night crowd of the 48-night meeting totaled 5,679 and they wagered 35,399 on the nine-race card. The first race was delayed 40 minutes while work was done on the track but the entire program was run off. Chicago Downs has not had a cancellation due to weather conditions in the last two years.
