Vince Martinez to Battle Chico Varona on June 24 NEW YORK, June 7 UP.— Vince Martinez, the welterweight contender who had a hearing before the New York State Athletic Commission last month when he was unable to get fights, was signed by the Internationa Boxing Club today for a 10 -round bout with Chico Varona of Cuba at Syracuse, N. Y., June 24. Martinez, the fourth ranked welterweight contender from Paterson, N. J., will meet the eight ranked Varona at the War Memorial Auditorium. It will be the first fight for Martinez since he defeated Al Andrews in 10 rounds at Madison Square Garden last December 10. Martinez broke with his manager, Bill Daly, last December, and claimed he had been unable to get rights since then. The New York State Athletic Commission, headed by Chairman Julius Helfand, held a series of hearings on Martinez charges last month. Helfand suspended Daly May 20 for "acts detrimental* to boxing" after he failed to appear at the fourth hearing. Daly is treasurer of the International Boxing Guild.
