CHILDERS PLAYS A HUNCH Secures Brood Mare Double D. at Low Price, and Double Kerry Winner of Three Straight. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 2. Cecil Chil-ders, El Ranchito Polo captain and regarded as one of the smartest horsemen in the Southwest, is playing a hunch. Always on the outlook for a rare bargain in horses, Childers was on hand at Arlington Downs in 1933 when the Three Ds Stock Farm held a dispersal sale. He had his eye on a brood mare which had been classified by the Three Ds management as unfit for breeding purposes since she had proven barren on several occasions, and did not seem to fit into the general run of things at the Waggoner farm. But, she was only seven years old, and Childers had an idea. The groom led Double D. into the sales ring. Despite the fact this mare was by Donnacona and had won some good races until she broke down as a three-year-old, bids were few and far between, and Childers finally secured her at a nominal figure. Childers took the mare to his farm, leaving the yearling by Kilkerry behind. This youngster was later named Double Kerry, and she made her bow at San Antonio during the recent Alamo Downs meeting, winning three straight races. The glory which resulted from this youngsters grand racing is now pointing direct at Double D., her proud mother, and Double Kerry might develop into a really great horse, for she has much of the speed and courage which predominated in her sire and dam. Childers hunch might come true, for he has bred Double D. to Kilkerry again and has a horsemans thought that he might get an even greater colt than Double Kerry.
