ROMAN SOLDIER FAVORITE Shift in Weight Makes Sachsen-maier Racer Derby Choice Over E. R. Bradleys Black Helen. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 2. Despite the fact that Col. E. R. Bradleys Black Helen won the Florida Derby, the three-year-old daughter of Black Toney La Troinne does not occupy the favored position for trie 5,-000! -added Texas Derby, which will be run over one and one-eighth miles Saturday, April 20, at Arlington Downs. That honor goes to Elwood Sachsenmaiers Roman Soldier. Roman Soldier is one of the outstanding three-year-old developments of the year and is the choice of the price layers in the rich Texas stake, which his stablemate, Plight, won in 1934. The handicappers are favoring Roman Soldier over Black Helen in the Texas Derby because the former will carry only 120 pounds against Black Helens 121. In the Florida race, Roman Soldier had top weight and the black son of Cohort Miamba ran into difficulties in the early stages of the race, closing with a burst of speed that carried him into third place, just behind Man-tagna. Roman Soldier had won four out of five races before bowing to Black Helen and Mantagna. He previously had defeated Mantagna. - Trainer Phil Reuter hasnt started that horse since that race, but is confident that he will make it two straight with Roman Soldier. He also saddled Plight last year. Brannon scored several impressive victories at Hialeah Park and won more money as a two-year-old than any of the others in the Derby field.. Whiskolo was second to Mrs. Payne Whitneys Gillie in the recent Santa Anita Handicap, while Hasty Glance was the three-year-old champion at Houston and held the western two-year-old title the past year, having won eight straight victories. In the number of consecutive victories, Whizzaway has the rest of the field outclassed, with seven straight to his credit He set two track records in amassing hid impressive string of victories, whirling three-quarters in 1:12, and a mile and seventy yards in 1:42. Furfiber, winner of five straight on Florida tracks, showed what he could do to many of the Texas Derby field in a run over one mile Saturday, defeating five of his rivals in the rich event.
