SPRINT RACE HEADS CARD Eight Speedy Horses Meet in Handicap at Bay Meadows. Indiantown Carries- Top Weight Today -In Berkeley Handicap Top Row in Work-" out for Saturdays Race. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 2. Eight good sprinters headed by Carisbrooke and Indiantown, star speedsters from the stable of Percy M. Pike, will meet in the Berkeley Handicap, a ,500 added feature which headlines the good card at Bay Meadows, Wednesday. Chictoney, High Tension, Sea Cliff, Happy Knot, R. D. Powers and Johns Birthday, are those that will fight it out with the Pike pair and it is estimated that the winner will have to run the six furlongs in 1:11 or better should the track be fast. It seemed possible that the affair might be decided over a slow track however, as threatening clouds hung over the course early Tuesday and rain was predicted. Indiantown and Carisbrooke are two of the fastest horses to appear before the public of the Bay district in recent years. The former, which carries top weight of 120 pounds in the Berkeley, was winner of ten races in succession in the East last summer. R. D. Powers is considered the best sprinter among the California-bred three-year-olds and recently came back after a lengthy rest to win his first start while Johns Birthday has started twice in the West and is unbeaten. Happy Knot is a greatly improved animal while the others can sprint with the best of them. Handicap horses are busy going through their paces, in preparation for the ,000 added Spring Handicap, which will have its first running Saturday. Top Row, star of the A. A. Baroni stable and the probable favorite for the race, took his first serious workout since his St. Patricks Handicap victory when he went one mile in 1:41 Tuesday morning He was clocked the quarter in :25, the half in :50, the three-quarters in 1:16. Thomasville and Teralice, the Percy M. Pike hopefuls for the Spring Handicap, also turned in creditable works Tuesday. Thomasville went six furlongs hard held in 1:21 while Teralice, a recent winner, travelled one mile in 1:42. Dark Winter, from the Fred M. Alger stable, breezed six furlongs in 1:20. The San Mateo Handicap, for three-year-olds and over at six furlongs, and the Russian River Handicap, for three-year-olds at one mile were twin features that were decided at the peninsular course Tuesday. The San Mateo was an open affair while Continued on eighteenth page. SPRINT RACE HEADS CARD Continued from first page. Easter Tommy, a California-bred, was favored in the Russian River. The weather was cool and threatening. The public picked out the right horse in a field of twelve California-bred maidens when they centered on Banker Conard as their choice in the opening race Tuesday. The son of Sleiveconard, which was reared in the San Joaquin valley, dashed to the front early and with Mauro riding well saved ground to win by one length from Regrebtan, while Bernard was a fast-going third. The distance was six furlongs and previous to this afternoons contest, the dozen animals entered had earned a total of less than 00 in their racing careers. Banker Conard is owned by A. Giboney and paid .20. Seven Up, a gelding that had been left at the post, or practically left, in three of his previous six starts, got away well in the second race and came through with a victory, to pay the record price of the meeting, 20.80. Although off stride, Seven Up was never far from the others, and staged a sensational stretch rush to find an opening near the end and best Altena, another outsider, while Nevada Sage, still another long shot, was third. Nevada Sage set the pace, with Altena following, but Seven Up passed them easily near the finish. Front-man, the favorite, and Chazzan, the second choice, were in trouble or would have been closer. The distance was five and one-half furlongs, and apprentice Wray rode Seven Up.
