I GENERAL NEWS OF THE DAY The United States Treasury reported Monday that nineteen foreign nations owed Uncle Sam a total of 3,438,703,671. March auto sales in Cook County were the best since 1930. The total of 9,420 for March showed a big gain over 6,833 in February and almost double that of 4,931 in March, 1934. The Ford was the leader with 3,235 cars sold to 1,335 Chevs and 1,235 Plymouths. The U. S. Steel chief says that the company is emerging from depression. The British island of Guernsey for the first time in history will try a woman as a slayer. Mrs. Gertrude de la Mare, twenty- seven, pleaded not guilty to a charge of murdering Alfred Brouard, seventy-six, for whom she worked as housekeeper at weekly. The prosecution alleged she slashed Br.ouards throat as he lay in bed so that she would inherit his farm by a forged will.
