VALUABLE NEW ENGLAND FUTURITY WEDNESDAY Pompoon Risks His Claim on Two-Year-Old Championship Louchheim Star Expected to Repeat His Belmont Futurity Triumph Latest Training Moves of His Most Dangerous Rivals PAWTUCKET, R. I., Oct. 26. With the inaugural running of the New-England Futurity only a few days away, the greatest array of two-year-olds ever to go postward in New England were undergoing final preparations for the big race on Wednesday, October 28, which has developed into the quandary "which juvenile can beat Pompoon and run off with that 5,000 pot of gold?" Training brilliantly and answering every demand of its shrewd trainer, Dan Clarke, the great thoroughbred of J. H. Louchheim appeared ready to defend in grand style the two-year-old championship he was awarded by his easy victory in the Belmont Futurity. Three prominent candidates for the rich fixture took the track this morning when the footing was fast, in mile finals for the mid-week special. Dog-away turned in the best trial of the trio, though none of the group was being driven out He completed his test in 1:42, nicely in hand, while his stablemate, Reaping Reward, and Rudie finished out a second slower, though both had speed in reserve at the end. While none of them showed as well as "Pompoon in his week-end work, the gallops drew considerable favorable comment. Dogaway was showing speed for the first half, which he rounded out in :47. Then he was taken in hand to complete the six furlongs in 1:1474, and seven-eighths in 1:28. Another eighth in :14 gave him 1:42 for the mile. REAPING REWARD WORKS. Reaping Reward, the winner of the United States Hotel Stakes at Saratoga Springs, went his initial half in :49, three-quarters in 1:1573, and seven-eighths in 1:203, and the mile in 1:43, handily all the way. Rudie, which sped a mile in 1:39, to register with ease on Friday, was further tightened in this mornings work. He moved along in :49, for the half; three-quarters in 1:1573, and seven-eighths in 1:28, galloping along smoothly, as his mile was completed in 1:43. Harry Richards was unable to make the Laurel stewards relent and lift his suspension so he could ride Pompoon, so "Sonny" Workman will be in the saddle. It is anticipated Dan Clarke will sharpen his colt in the morning. Owner Jerry Louchheim is due for tomorrows racing with a party of friends. Robertson and Kastner will handle the Milky Way Farm pair, Dogaway and Reaping Reward, with Seabo on Ocean Roll. Knott has been engaged for Rudie. These four appear the principal rivals of Pompoon.
