NEW ORLEANS TURF NOTES Alderman J. J. Coughlin has made application for nine horses to be shipped here from Chicago. Another, politician who will ship horses here is Senator W. C Casey, of Missouri, which are trained by J. C. Cahn. E. B. Shipp, who has Irenes Bob and others, will bring two newcomers, to the Fair Grounds this winter in Joe Jay and the veteran Oddesa Beau. In addition to his jockey, J. R. Hill, he will start a new jockey in Donald Manifold, brother of "Hank" Manifold, who was developed by Shipp. Manifold will join Shipp- in New Orleans from his home in Kilgore, Neb. Bill Johnson is to send eleven yearlings here by Nusakan, a Rancocas-bred horse which was one of Earl Sandes first purchases when he turned trainer. Joseph Cattarinich has a. shifty juvenile in Girls Chance, which has won two races at Epsom Downs, and will be shipped here along with the others in the stable, which include Nellie Mc, another Derby prospect Work at the Fair Grounds is now going full speed, with all departments functioning, and the plant is rapidly beginning to shape up to opening day appearances. Several shipments were expected from Texas over the week-end and during the coming week. Stable room is now at a premium. Among the leading trainers c the country who will have horses here this winter are Ed Haughton, who was fourth in the standing last year; B. Hernandez, who was sixth and others in the first fifteen include A. g Tarn, C. Troutt, J. Oros, J. R. Gregory, J d Mikel and J. W. Ogle. It is estimated that 11,000 horses raced at all tracks during 1936, which is an all time high. The total number of racers in 1902 was 5,271, which gives some idea of the increase in the business.
