SCATTER BRAIN REPEATER Rose Representative Accounts for Second Purse at Laurel. Trainer Selby Burch Has Banner Day, Saddling Three Winners Outsiders Again Dominate Days Races. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 26. Racing back to his recent success in an overnight claiming race here a few days ago. Scatter Brain, from the A. C. Rose stable, scored his second victory of the meeting and his fourth of the year when he took the measure of five other sturdy distance performers in the fifth race of a featureless program beginning the final week of racing for the Maryland State Fair, Inc., at Laurel today. Selby Burch had a banner day, saddling three wintners Princess Athene in the second, Parapet in the fourth and Iron Ore in the sixth. Neglected in the wagering despite his recent triumph, the score of Scatter Brain, four-year-old son of Mad Hatter Fly by Day, came by a matter of inches when he raced across the line a head before E. K. Brysons Calumet Dick, which races in improved fashion under the handling of R. Root while two lengths back, E. J. Regans veteran Aladdins Dream easily led home the disappointing favorite, Bulwark, from the Mrs. E. Denemark barn, and the two others, Chatmoss and Weston. DE CAMILLAS RIDING. Jockey E. de Camillas, who has been riding in splendid form here, was instrumental in the victory of the Rose plater. Keeping his mount back of the speedy Weston for six furlongs, Scatter Brain overhauled the A. C. Compton four-year-old as the field swung out of the back stretch, then riding a particularly strong finish, kept his mount going resolutely to withstand the forward rush of Calumet Dick. At the end the fighting Duelist had little difficulty matching the final rush of Aladdins Dream, although there might have been a closer decision had not the Regan six-year-old suffered from interference on the first turn when he was knocked off stride by the Bryson gelding. Through the stretch, with the two leaders bearin gout, Aladdins Dream went to the Continued on thirty-fourth page. Rain that fell for a couple of hours before the start of the program brought about a slight change in track conditions and cut down the attendance to the smallest of the meeting. The track was rated as good, and ! once again outsiders, which have dominated here, were in the majority. SECOND STRAIGHT WIN. Two-year-olds under claiming conditions met in the introductory offering at one mile and seventy yards, and it furnished an opprir-. tunity for Harrys Dream, from the H. E Simpson barn, to earn his second consecutive victory when he turned back E. Coates Clarion Call, Mrs. E. Truemans Exhort and the seven others that were led by Boulevard. Finding good support and handled nicely by K. McCombs, the Simpson color-bearer came from behind to be a half length before the Coates starter at the close, while Exhort was just a length back to capture third well in advance of Boulevard, which found the distance too exacting. Coming out of retirement after over two years, Princess Athene, from the S. L. Burch stable, surprised by accounting for the three-quarters sprint fashioned for cheap platers, second on the card and which attracted a field of thirteen. In this Riding High was the one to take the place award, finishing a length back of the winner, while third went to Miss Careful. Trainer S. L. Burch saddled his second winner of the afternoon when Parapet proved best of a poor band of distance performers that met in the fourth offering, which was also at one mile and seventy yards, under claiming conditions. Overlooked in the wagering, Parapet, a colorbearer of Montpelier Farms, registered at the expense of She-knows to chalk up his second score of the season, and the triumph was the third for outsiders in the first four races. Entrusted to H. McDermott, who made his riding debut here a few days ago, Parapet, at 18 to 1, came from far back in the field of nine to score by a length and one-half, with She-knows taking the measure of Stipulate by a wide margin. It was a lucky victory for the three-year-old Montpelier filly as she stole through on the inside from the seventh post and ran down Sheknows in the final quarter.
