MAKUS BY TWO LENGTHS Registers Popular Victory in Fourth at River Downs. Baste Triumphs in Previous Race to Give 0. P. Woodward Silks a "Double" Adverse Conditions; CINCINNATI, Ohio, Oct 26. Old man winter" made his first appearance at River Downs this afternoon and following a steady rain that started late yesterday, conditions were the most inclement of the meeting. With the rain causing a change in track conditions, it was necessary to re-open the fifth and seventh events but luckily large fields were named for the other races and the pro-gram .stood up in fine fashion. As to be expected, only the regulars were on hand for the program, which was devoid of a feature. Despite the muddy oval, several of the races resulted in thrilling finishes, but favorites were in the minority. The first popular score came with the fourth event, which afforded O. F. Woodward, New York sportsman, a chance to furnish his second straight winner when Makus, a lukewarm favorite, turned back Gabriel, Fumble and seven others. Under Porter Roberts and hustled into a clear lead during the opening quarter, the home-bred son of Chatover had only a clear advantage during the opening half mile of the six furlongs. Fumble, on the outside, and Kittys Rival, in the middle of the track, were right with him and slightly before Gabriel leaving the back stretch. But approaching the final quarter Hanka moved Gabriel into second place, and although failing to menace the winner, which reached the end two lengths before him, was much the best of Fumble, which lost ground throughout. Obstinate Boy showed little to merit his support. Gay Troubadour, one of the choices, dropped back during the opening sixteenth and failed to improve his position, while Kittys Rival was done after five-sixteenths. IIENRIERVA SURPRISES. Henrierva chalked up her first success in two months and provided a mild surprise when she carried the Detroit-owned Greenfield Stable colors to a driving victory at the end of six furlongs in the first race. Donna Barona was second, a half a length back of the winner and the same distance before Slant Eye, which beat Lady Fhara-mond for minor honors. Had not her saddle slipped in the stretch, Lady Pharamond probably would have been a stronger factor at the. end. Bert Thornton rushed the winner to the front and after five-sixteenths she established a big advantage but tired rapidly in the final sixteenth and had little left when Donna Barona, the choice, offered her belated challenge. Pat C. disappointed for the sixth time during the meeting when he finished tenth in a feld of eleven in the three-quarters second race, which resulted in an easy victory for G. Watts Silver Tidings. Thunder Lou was second and Game third. O. F. Woodward furnished the winner of the third race, fashioned for two- and three-year-old platers, when Baste led For Romance, Dixie Flapper and nine others to the end of six furlongs.
