CROSSBOW II. IN FAST TIME Runs Five and Three-Quarter Fur- 1 longs in 1:08 at Empire City. Gives Weight to Three Opponents, Finishing i Two Lengths in Front March-ingHome Second. YONKERS, N. T., Oct 26. Crossbow II. ran one of the swiftest five and three-quarter furlongs of the Empire Association meeting today when he carried the silks of Warren Wright to victory in the Copake Handicap. He ran the distance in l:035i and the only faster race was Sgt Byrnes victory In 1:08. In this feature the son of Crusader was giving away weight to every other starter and his score was an easy one when he was two lengths clear at the end. The place went to Mrs. William Ziegler, Jr.s Marching Home and he in turn was well before ,R. L. Gerrys Chancer, the only other starter was Fortification. It was a wintry day for the racing and while the sun broke through the clouds late In the day the Hilltop course was anything but comfortable and the crowd the" smallest of the meeting. There was little delay at the post for the feature and Arcaro had the winner away on top and when the colt had settled nicely into his stride he took hold of him and rated him along. Chancer was racing in second place and then came Marching Home running along on the rail. Fortification was not far back of these and the small field swung from the back stretch in close order. HOLDS LEAD SECURE. Rounding into the stretch Marching Home made a bid on the inside but Arcaro swung his whip once and Crossbow II. jumped away to hold his lead secure and he was in hand at the end. Marching Home easily disposed of Chancef and Fortification ran a dull race, never being a serious contender. Mahdi, from the Sage Stable, and J. M. Simmers Rainland staged a great duel in the five and three-quarter furlongs of the Coldspring Purse when they crossed the line so closely lapped .the camera was called upon to make the decision. Two lengths back of the battling pair, William Ziegler, Jr.s The Runner closed a big gap to take third from Talked About, the favorite of the company. Sammy Renick. was wide awake at the start and he soon had Mahdi clear of the others and racing along under slight restraint. Rainland and Salavina were closely lapped and went after the son of Dis Done, and Smart Agnes came next. Both Talked About and The Runner were not so alert and it was a considerable handicap to the favorite, which had the inside position, the least favorable racing through the back stretch. Mahdi held to his lead in the stretch, but there Rainland, after losing some ground on the turn, came over and closed on him rapidly. At the same time Anderson attempted to send Talked About through on the inside, only to be badly blocked. BY SMALLEST MARGIN. Right to the last nod the leading pair fought it out, but Mahdi had lasted to win by a nose. The Runner was third because of the manner in which Talked About was blocked in the stretch run. Ritorno, daughter of Scotch Broom that races for Thomas Calcina, graduated from the maiden class in the opening five and three-quarter furlongs dash, the first offering, when she rushed into a long early lead and never was caught. The finish for the place was exceedingly close between W. R. Coes Pompish and Mrs. W. Plunkett Stewarts Butter, and Betty Vic was lapped on the pair. Lotofus, which has been quitting badly in her races, stuck it out in the five and three-quarter furlongs of the second race to score for Mrs. G. Winfrey, with Miss Marie Krugs Dreamy Isle saving second place from Anne G., and Choice Goods, a recent arrival from New England, took fourth. Unfortunately in this race Buzzin Around was left at the post, but galloped after the field to beat Tuleyries Mite to the finish.
