E. Paul Waggoner announced today that the Southwest Breeders Futurity, which will be run at Arlington Downs Wednesday, November 4, over six furlongs, with weights at 122 pounds, will carry a total purse of ,000, making it one of the richest juvenile races in the South. Decision to increase the value was made by Waggoner after scanning the list of candidates, twenty-eight Oklahoma-and Texas-bred two-year-olds remaining eligible, and it is in keeping with his desire to further stimulate interest in the thoroughbred industry in the Southwest Last year it was worth ,000. "The Southwest Breeders Futurity, we hope, will grow into fame, as have other richly endowed futurities in the nation, and the Texas Jockey Club will go right along with the breeders of this section in encouraging the industry," commented Waggoner, in explaining the aims of the Texas Jockey Club. Seventy-seven 1934 foals were originally nominated and the first payment on July 1 1935, found fifty-three still remaining in, and the final payment on July 1, 1936, was made for twenty-eight, this being the largest ever noted. Thoroughbred enthusiasts throughout the Southwest are awaiting with interest the outcome of the 1936 Futurity and the race itself promises to be exciting, to say nothing of the strong possibility that the Waggoner brothers will be dislodged from the supremacy, since many of the Oklahoma-bred youngsters have proven their qualities.
